The Three Zones
Aberration is entirely underground and lacks traditional flying mounts (Pteranodons and Argentavis are disabled). The map is divided into three vertically stacked biomes.
1. The Green Zone (Fertile Region)
The safest area and your starting point. Rich in basic resources and water. Beware of Raptors and Ravagers. The giant glowing mushrooms provide light. Avoid the hallucinogenic red mushrooms.
2. The Blue Zone (Bioluminescent Region)
Colder and much more dangerous. Nameless will spawn and attack you endlessly unless you carry a Charge Light (like a Bulbdog or Shinehorn). This zone is rich in metal, blue gems, and crystal.
3. The Red Zone (Radioactive Region)
The bottom of the map. You must wear a full Hazard Suit to survive the radiation, or you will die quickly. This area contains red gems, Rock Drake trenches, and Reaper Queens.
Stealing Rock Drake Eggs
Rock Drakes are the apex travel mount of Aberration. They can cloak, climb walls, and glide across massive caverns. Like Wyverns, they cannot be tamed; you must steal their eggs.
- Preparation: You need a full Hazard Suit, multiple backup suits, climbing picks, zip-lines, and a strong Spinosaurus or Megalosaurus (they are immune to radiation).
- Location: The trench is deep within the Red Zone. Follow the glowing purple paths downwards.
- The Heist: The moment you pick up an egg, every Rock Drake in the area will uncloak and attack. Glide away using a Glider Suit attachment or fight your way out with a high-level Spino.
- Raising: Baby Rock Drakes only eat Nameless Venom, which you harvest by killing Nameless in the Blue Zone using a strong mount.
Taming Reapers
Reaper Kings are massive, highly durable combat mounts. They take vastly reduced damage as long as they are NOT exposed to Charge Light. To get one, you must become pregnant.
The Pregnancy Process
- Venture into the deepest parts of the Red Zone to find a Reaper Queen. Trap her using a large metal gateway trap.
- Lower her health below 10% using a strong mount and Charge Light (to bypass her armor).
- Turn OFF your Charge Light. Bring your survivor close to her with a shield. She will perform a unique tail-whip attack that grabs your survivor and impregnates you.
- You will receive a timer buff. Before the timer expires, absorb as much XP as possible (killing Spinos is best). The XP gained adds up to +75 bonus levels to the baby.
- When the timer hits zero, the baby Reaper King bursts from your chest (killing you if you aren't in a safe box with a bed). Immediately claim it using Reaper Pheromones, or it will attack you!
The Rockwell Boss Fight
Sir Edmund Rockwell is a massive, mutated horror anchored to the center of the arena. This is one of the most mechanically intensive boss fights in ARK.
- The Mechanics: Rockwell is immune to damage while his tentacles are up. You must destroy all the tentacles to stun him, then deal damage to his chest.
- The Army: Unlike other bosses, Rexes are bad here. The meta is 19 highly mutated Megalosaurus (which don't require sleep on Aberration) or a group of Rock Drakes, and 1 Yutyrannus.
- The On-Foot Strat: Many players ignore dinosaur armies entirely. Instead, they bring high-durability Pump-Action Shotguns and Cactus Broth (to avoid aggro from Nameless). They run around the arena shooting the tentacles on foot.
Bob's Tall Tales: Steampunk Ascent (DLC)
If you own the premium Bob's Tall Tales expansion, Aberration is enhanced with Steampunk technology, offering massive quality-of-life improvements for traversing the vertical map.
- ⚙️ The Zeppelin: A massive, craftable airship that functions as a mobile sky-base. It is the only true "flying" mount allowed on Aberration, bypassing the no-flyer rule.
- 🐕 Cosmo (Fantastic Tame): A shoulder-mounted, web-slinging spider. Cosmo allows you to swing around the map like Spider-Man, negating the need for zip-lines or climbing picks in the early game.
- 🧪 Gene Trait Splicing: Use the Gene Scanner to extract specific traits (like increased melee or health regeneration) from wild creatures and inject them into your own tames, creating perfect mutants.
Surface Loot & Charge Nodes
The Surface Entrances
The Surface of Aberration burns at hundreds of degrees during the day. You can only go there at night (usually 10% Day / 90% Night cycle is best). It contains extreme amounts of Element Ore and the best loot drops on the map.
- Northwest Surface: Entrance at 19.3, 27.6 (Safest)
- Northeast Surface: Entrance at 23.0, 68.3
- Southwest Surface: Entrance at 64.6, 22.4
Crafting Element
Unlike other maps, you do not need to defeat bosses to get Element on Aberration. You can craft it at Charge Nodes scattered around the map using: 10x Element Ore, 10x Red Gems, 10x Blue Gems, 10x Green Gems, 20x Congealed Gas, and 20x Charge Battery.
