THE ABSOLUTE'S GIFT

Tadpole Locations, Best Powers, and Story Consequences

Consuming Mind Flayer Parasites unlocks an exclusive skill tree. These powers are some of the strongest abilities in the game, completely breaking the action economy. But giving in to the tadpole comes at a cost.

1. How Tadpoles Work

Shared Resource

Tadpoles are a shared inventory item. If you consume a tadpole on your main character, that tadpole is gone. You cannot use it on Astarion or Shadowheart. You must carefully decide who gets the upgrades.

  • Companions: Not all companions want to consume tadpoles. You must pass a Persuasion check in camp to convince characters like Lae'zel or Shadowheart to use them.
  • Awakened Buff (Zaith'isk): In Act 1 (Creche Y'llek), if your main character sits in the Zaith'isk machine and passes all 3 saving throws, they receive the Awakened buff. This makes ALL Illithid powers cost a Bonus Action instead of an Action!
  • Half-Illithid Bonus: If you consume the Astral-Touched Tadpole in Act 3, all Tier 1 Illithid powers are unlocked automatically for free, refunding any tadpoles you previously spent on them!

2. Best Tier 1 & 2 Powers

You should prioritize these powers as soon as you find your first few parasites in Act 1.

Favourable Beginnings

The first Attack Roll or Ability Check you make against any target gains a bonus equal to your Proficiency Bonus.

Why it's essential: It almost guarantees your first hit in combat and gives a massive boost to your first dialogue check with every NPC.

Luck of the Far Realms

Once per Long Rest, you can change any successful Attack Roll into an automatic Critical Hit.

Why it's essential: Paladins and Rogues can use this to guarantee a critical Divine Smite or Sneak Attack, instantly deleting bosses.

Cull the Weak

When you bring a creature down to fewer Hit Points than your total number of evolved Illithid powers, it dies instantly and explodes.

Why it's essential: If you invest 10 tadpoles into a character, any enemy that drops below 10 HP instantly explodes, saving you precious actions.

3. Tier 3: The Astral-Touched Tadpole

At the beginning of Act 3, the Emperor will offer you a special tadpole. Consuming or "opening your mind" to it unlocks the outer ring of the skill tree (Tier 3) and automatically grants you the Fly ability.

Tier 3 Power Effect Synergy
Black Hole Pulls all nearby enemies to a center point and slows them. Can be cast 5 times per combat. Cast this to group enemies up, then have a Sorcerer drop a Fireball on the cluster.
Freecast Removes resource costs (Spell Slots, Ki Points, Action Surge) for your next action. Allows a Level 12 Wizard to cast two Level 6 spells (like Chain Lightning) in the same combat.
Mind Sanctuary Creates a zone where those inside can take Actions and Bonus Actions interchangeably. Fighters can use their bonus action to attack normally, breaking the action economy.
Displacer Beast Shape Transforms you into a Displacer Beast with 85 HP. You can use its tentacle attacks and illusive abilities. An incredible emergency "second life" button for squishy spellcasters like Gale or Wizards.
Mind Blast Emits a conical wave of psychic energy that Stuns all enemies in its path. Combines perfectly with Black Hole: Group them up, then Mind Blast to stun the entire room.
⚠ Story Consequences

Using normal tadpoles (Tier 1 and 2) has absolutely zero negative consequences on the ending of the game. It will only add a few minor dialogue checks.

However, if you accept the Astral-Touched Tadpole (Tier 3) in Act 3, your character will undergo a permanent visual transformation: black veins will spread across your face and body, and your eyes will black out. This cosmetic change cannot be reversed without mods.

The Ultimate Choice: You will find the *Supreme Tadpole* at the very end of the game. Using it fully transforms you into a Mind Flayer, locking you into the "Ceremorphosis" ending.

5. Key Tadpole Farming Locations

You need parasites to gain these powers. Here is where to find the easiest ones in Act 1.

  • 1

    The Goblin Camp Leaders (3x)

Each of the three Absolute leaders in the Goblin Camp (Priestess Gut, Dror Ragzlin, and Minthara) drops a parasite when killed.

  • 2

    The Dying True Soul (1x)

Find Edowin dying in the forest between the Druid Grove and the Blighted Village (near the Owlbear cave). Let him die, then interact with his body to extract the tadpole.

  • 3

    Grymforge: True Soul Nere (1x)

Rescue Nere from the cave-in at Grymforge (Underdark), then kill him to claim the parasite in his head.

  • 4

    Moonrise Towers Dock (2x)

In Act 2, inspect the shipping crates on the docks outside Moonrise Towers to find two loose tadpoles inside the Zhentarim cargo.

  • 5

    The Emperor's Hideout (Act 3)

In the basement of the Elfsong Tavern, inside the Emperor's old room, check his desk for a free parasite.

  • 6

    The Iron Throne (Act 3)

Omeluum holds a parasite inside the underwater Iron Throne prison. Rescue him, and you can claim it from a table nearby.
