How To Survive Silent Hill

Silent Hill 2 is not a game you beat by fighting well. It is a game you get through by choosing what is worth a bullet and what is worth walking away from.

The two difficulty settings

  • Combat and puzzles are set separately, and you pick both before the game starts.
  • Puzzle difficulty changes the riddles themselves, not just the number of tries — on the hardest setting some of them are written as verse.
  • Combat difficulty changes how much punishment the town takes to put down, and how much James can take.

What to carry and what to spend

  • The steel pipe carries most of the run. Firearms are for bosses and for rooms you cannot walk out of.
  • Downed enemies get up again. A stomp costs nothing and saves the ammo you would spend on the second encounter.
  • Health items are worth hoarding — but see the endings page first, because how hurt you play is something the game is quietly recording.

Reading the town

  • The radio hisses when something is close. It is a proximity warning, not a direction.
  • The map marks its own dead ends and locked doors as you find them; if a route is not crossed out, it is still worth walking.
  • Save often. The game is generous with save points and stingy with everything else.
