Fighting, And When Not To

Silent Hill 2 was never built around good combat, and the remake did not turn it into an action game. What it did was put the camera behind James and give him a dodge, which means a fight is now something you can lose on your own terms instead of on the camera's.

What the camera changed

  • You see what James sees, so anything behind him is genuinely behind him. Rooms have blind spots now, and backing into a corner is a real tactic rather than a camera accident.
  • Aiming is over the shoulder and deliberate. Firearms are slow to bring up on purpose — the game is not asking you to win a shootout.
  • Enemies flank. In the original they came at you; here they spread out, and two of them in an open room is worse than three in a corridor.

The dodge

  • It is the only defensive move James has, and it has a real window rather than an invincibility button. Read the wind-up, not the distance.
  • Dodging away is usually wrong. Dodging past puts you behind something that needs a second to turn, which is the whole point.
  • Stamina is finite. Panicking with the dodge leaves you standing still exactly when you need it.

Melee, and the stomp

  • The steel pipe is the whole game's weapon. Swings are committed — start one and you are finishing it — so hit when something is recovering, not when it is winding up.
  • Downed is not dead. The stomp costs nothing and it is the difference between one fight and two, because anything you walk away from gets up behind you.
  • Wide swings hit one thing. If two of them close in, back through a doorway and make them queue.

The fight you should not take

Most encounters in the town are optional and the corridors are wide enough to run. Ammo spent proving a point in a hallway is ammo missing in the hotel. The game never scores you on kills.
