This covers how the 2024 remake plays differently, not a scene-by-scene diff — the story, the people and the endings are the same shape, and enumerating every content difference is how a guide starts inventing things. If you have played the original, this is what will feel unfamiliar.

What plays differently
- Combat is built around a dodge and deliberate aiming instead of the original's stiffer movement. It is still not an action game, and it is still not trying to be.
- The town and its buildings are larger and more walkable, with more to search than the original's tighter layouts.
- Puzzles were rebuilt rather than ported, and combat and puzzle difficulty are still set separately before you start.
- Everything was performed and recorded again. The original's line readings are famous and divisive; the remake's are a different take, not a restoration.
What was left alone
- The story, the people and the structure of the town. James still comes for the letter, and the game still ends where it ended.
- Akira Yamaoka's music. The original composer returned, and the score is still the reason the fog is frightening.
- The refusal to explain itself. Nothing was clarified for a modern audience, which is the most important thing the remake got right.
