What Actually Happened

This page spoils the entire game, including the ending. Silent Hill 2 is worth meeting cold, and nothing here will help you finish it — it is for afterwards, when you want to know whether you read it right.

Read this after you have finished

Everything below assumes you have reached an ending. If you have not, the endings guide tells you how each one is earned without saying why any of them happen.

The letter

  • Mary died three years before the game starts. James knows this, and the game lets you believe he does not.
  • The letter is the only thing James is certain of, and it is the first thing the town takes back — the envelope empties as the game goes on.
  • He did not come to Silent Hill because he was called. He came because it is where they were happy, and because of what he did at the end of her illness.

The people the town brought

🌹 Maria
Mary with everything James wishes were different, and she dies in front of him more than once. She is not a ghost or a twin — she is the town showing him what he says he wanted.
🔪 Angela
Here for her mother and running from her father. Her Silent Hill is a house on fire and a set of stairs, and it looks nothing like James's. The town is personal to each person in it.
🔫 Eddie
A boy who was laughed at until he stopped caring what happened next. He is what happens when someone stops arguing with their own guilt and starts agreeing with it.
🔺 Pyramid Head
Not a villain and not a stalker. James made him out of the Toluca executioners in the museum paintings, because he wanted something in the town to punish him and nothing else would.

The endings, and what each one says

🚪 Leave
James takes what he did with him and keeps living. Earned by looking after yourself and by going back to Mary rather than to Maria.
🌊 In Water
He does not. Earned by playing hurt, reading the letter again, and lingering on Angela's knife — the game reads all three as a man deciding.
🌹 Maria
He leaves with the version he preferred, and the cough at the end tells you how that goes. The bleakest of the three, though it is not the one that looks it.

Why the town looks like that

  • The fog and the rust are not weather. Each person gets the Silent Hill their own head furnishes, which is why Angela sees flames where James sees a corridor.
  • The monsters are shaped like the thing James cannot say out loud, and the game is content to let you work out what that is on your own.
  • Nothing in the town judges him. It only keeps handing him the evidence until he does it himself.
