GUIDE

Combat & Signs

Witcher combat rewards preparation and patience over button-mashing. Learn the rhythm and even Death March difficulty becomes fair.

The Fundamentals

  • Fast attack = speed & DPS vs agile foes. Strong attack = big damage vs armored/large foes.
  • Dodge (tap) for small sidesteps that keep you close; Roll (hold) to escape big AoE — but rolling breaks your momentum.
  • Steel sword for humans & non-monsters, Silver sword for monsters. Always apply the matching oil.
  • Adrenaline builds as you fight — spend it on stronger attacks or fuel Sign/ability perks.
  • Crossbow grounds flying beasts (griffins, wyverns) and pops underwater foes instantly.

Using the Signs

SignBest use
QuenCast before every engagement — it absorbs a hit and can be built into a lifesteal bubble
IgniBurst damage & crowd control; melts groups and ignites gas/oil
AardKnock down staggered enemies for a free finisher; break ice armor & shields
YrdenMandatory vs wraiths & the Wild Hunt — forces ghosts corporeal; also slows melee foes
AxiiPuppet a foe to fight for you; the Delusion upgrade unlocks extra dialogue & rewards
Prep beats reflexes

Before a tough fight: read the bestiary weakness, oil your blade, drink the right potion & decoction, and set a trap with Yrden or bombs. Then it's just execution.
