MOUNTS & HORSES

Tame the wilds of Hyrule. Discover how to catch the best horses and find the legendary secret mounts hidden across the map.

Taming & Bonding

To tame a horse, you must sneak up behind it (crouching or using stealth-boosting food) and press A to mount it. Once mounted, rapidly press L to soothe the horse before it bucks you off. Horses with better stats (solid colors) require more stamina to tame than spotted horses.

Once tamed, you must increase your Bond with the horse to max so it obeys your commands. Feed it apples or soothe it immediately after it follows a direction correctly. Once bonded, ride it to any Stable and pay 20 Rupees to register it and give it a name.

Special & Rare Mounts

The Royal White Horse

Location: Safula Hill (Outskirts Stable).

A direct descendant of Zelda's personal steed. It has incredibly high stamina (5 spurs). You must have at least 2 full wheels of stamina (or stamina-restoring food) to tame it. Registering it unlocks the Royal Saddle and Bridle.

The Giant Horse

Location: Taobab Grassland (Lake Tower region).

Believed to be a descendant of Ganondorf's horse. It is twice the size of a normal horse and has max strength/infinite stamina, but it cannot sprint. You'll need massive amounts of stamina to soothe it initially.

Lord of the Mountain

Location: Satori Mountain.

A glowing, mystical creature that appears only when the peak of Satori Mountain glows with a green light. It has maximum stats across the board, but it cannot be registered at a stable. If you dismount for too long, it will vanish.

Epona

Location: Amiibo Drop.

Link's iconic horse from Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess. Epona can only be obtained by scanning the Smash Bros. Link or Twilight Princess Link amiibo. She comes with max bond, 4 strength, 4 speed, and 4 stamina, and gets her own unique saddle when registered.

Other Rideable Creatures

Horses aren't the only things you can ride in Hyrule! However, none of these creatures can be registered at a stable.

  • Bears: Found in the Hickory Woods and Gerudo Highlands. They are slow but can deal damage if you ride them into enemies.
  • Deer / Bucks: Essential for a specific shrine quest (The Crowned Beast) in the Rabia Plain.
  • Stalhorse (Skeleton Horse): Found in the Hebra Mountains or Akkala Highlands at night, usually ridden by Stalkoblins. They will instantly die when the sun rises at 5:00 AM.

Horse Gear & Customization

Once you reach max bond with a horse, you can talk to the stable hand tending the horses (at Highland Stable, Outskirts Stable, South Akkala Stable, or Woodland Stable) to change your horse's mane style and equip new saddles or bridles.

Monster Bridle & Saddle

Purchased from Kilton's Fang and Bone shop using Mon. Purely cosmetic, giving your horse a spooky, dark aesthetic.

Ancient Horse Gear (DLC)

The Ancient Saddle (found at the Horse God Spring) allows you to teleport your horse directly to your location by whistling, no matter how far away they are. The Ancient Bridle (found at Satori Mountain) gives your horse two extra stamina spurs!

Horse Fairy (Reviving Dead Horses)

If your favorite registered horse is killed in battle or falls off a cliff, do not despair. Travel to the Lake Tower region and locate the Horse God Bridge down south in the Faron Grasslands.

Here you will find Malanya, the Horse God. For a one-time fee of 1,000 Rupees, Malanya will awaken. Afterward, he can resurrect any registered horse that has died. If you killed the horse yourself, he might give you a stern warning before bringing it back!
