FAQ & TIPS

Karmic Dice, Multiplayer, and Hidden Mechanics

1. Game Mechanics

Karmic Dice is an option enabled by default in the Gameplay settings. It prevents "failure streaks" (rolling multiple 1s or 2s in a row) by artificially fudging the dice rolls in the background to ensure you eventually succeed.

Should you turn it off? Yes. Karmic Dice also applies to enemies! This means if you build a super-tanky Paladin with 25 AC, Karmic Dice will eventually force enemies to roll a Critical Hit (20) just to break their "miss streak." Turning it off ensures true D&D randomness.

Unlike tabletop D&D 5e (which requires a 13 in specific stats to multiclass), Baldur's Gate 3 has ZERO stat requirements for multiclassing. You can be a Wizard with 8 Strength and freely multiclass into a Barbarian. Note: Multiclassing is disabled on Explorer difficulty, but you can change the difficulty to Balanced, level up, and change it back!

Yes. By interacting with the Magic Mirror at your camp, you can freely change your custom character's hair, makeup, voice, and pronouns. However, you cannot change your race or body type. Origin characters (like Astarion or Shadowheart) cannot have their physical appearance altered at all.

The maximum level in Baldur's Gate 3 is Level 12. While tabletop D&D goes up to Level 20, Larian capped it at 12 because spells beyond that level (like Wish or True Resurrection) are too powerful and game-breaking for a structured video game narrative. You will likely hit the level cap early in Act 3.

You need to find Withers in the Dank Crypt (Act 1). Once he moves to your camp, you can pay him 100 gold to completely respec your character from Level 1, changing your class, subclass, and ability scores.

Pro-Tip: Withers doesn't care if you steal from him. You can pay him 100 gold, respec, and then use Astarion to pickpocket the 100 gold right back! If you fail the pickpocket roll, Withers won't even attack you.

2. Co-op & Multiplayer

If a friend joins your game and makes a custom character, that character used to be permanently stuck in your party. Thankfully, Larian added the Withers' Wardrobe of Wayward Friends. Talk to your friend's avatar in camp while they are offline, and select the dialogue option to store them in the Wardrobe. You can pull them back out whenever your friend returns!

The host can assign companions to specific players via the "Session" menu (Escape -> Session). The player assigned to the companion controls them in combat, manages their inventory, and initiates dialogue with them.

Cross-save: Yes! As long as you link your Larian account, you can play on your PC, upload your save to the cloud, and continue playing on your PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.

Cross-play: With the release of Patch 7, Larian is actively testing full cross-play, but as of right now, you can only play with users on the same platform (PC with PC, PS5 with PS5).

3. Story & Romances

Baldur's Gate 3 runs on a "Queue" system for camp events. If you go too long without Long Resting, multiple story events will pile up in the queue, but only ONE can play per night. This causes you to miss crucial romance triggers or companion dialogue.

Fix: Do "Partial Rests" (Long Rest without using camp supplies). This advances the night and clears out the event queue without wasting your food!

In Act 1, yes. You can flirt with and kiss several companions. However, once you reach Act 2, the game forces a lock-in moment. Your companions will make you choose between them. The only exceptions are Halsin and Minthara, who are open to polyamorous arrangements if your "primary" partner (like Astarion or Shadowheart) agrees to it.
