The basics
Is this the 2019 remake?
No. This guide covers the 1998 original. The remake is a separate game with its own guide.
Where can I play it today?
On PC through GOG (since 27 August 2024) or Steam (since 1 April 2026), and on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 since 19 August 2025, where it is also part of PlayStation Plus Premium. The older discs and cartridge run on their original consoles. The Versions page has every date.
What order should I play the scenarios in?
One character's A scenario, then save at the end and play the other character's B scenario from that save. Leon A then Claire B, or Claire A then Leon B. Then play the other pair.
Are the Leon and Claire scenarios the same?
No. They share the city and most of the police station, but each character gets different weapons, meets different people and solves some puzzles differently: Leon collects chess plugs, Claire collects stones.
How many times can I save?
As many as you have Ink Ribbons, at typewriters. Saving too often lowers your end rank, and the guides set the limit differently; the Unlockables page has each version. Four guides say a single save costs you the Gatling Gun.

Why didn't the Gatling Gun unlock?
Four guides say a single save costs you the Gatling Gun; two add no First Aid Sprays. The run is a B scenario in under 2 hours 30 minutes with an A or B rank; one guide asks for an A rank, and one says a save during the run gives you the Sub Machine Gun instead.
How do I get the alternate costumes?
Reach the police station in an A scenario without picking up any item, kill the zombie Brad Vickers below the courtyard, and take his key to the Dark Room lockers. The Unlockables page has the steps.
How do I unlock HUNK and Tofu?
The guides tie them to clearing scenarios with good ranks, but they disagree on how many and which. The Unlockables page lists each guide's version. On the GOG and Steam release both modes are open from the start, and the PC original had them open too.
Does the Nintendo 64 version have Extreme Battle?
No. It has its own extras instead: the EX Files, an item randomizer and violence settings.
Where people get stuck
What is the safe code in the police station?
2236. The Police Memorandum gives it.
What is the password for the lab computer?
GUEST, according to two guides.
I took the Sub Machine Gun in A. Is it gone for B?
From the police station locker, yes. One guide says one then appears in the B character's lab, near a body in the culture experiment room.
Mr. X keeps coming back. Can I kill him?
Not in the police station. You can knock him down for a while, and he drops ammo. He is only finished at the very end of the B scenario, with the Rocket Launcher.
