Objective: Train with the Greybeards, then recover the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller.
Shouts learned: Whirlwind Sprint (all 3 words) and Clear Skies (later).
1. Climbing the 7,000 Steps
Travel to the village of Ivarstead at the foot of the mountain, then climb the pilgrim's path to High Hrothgar. Along the way you'll pass 10 engraved tablets telling the legend of the Voice, and possibly a frost troll near the top — a tough early fight, so consider sprinting past it.
2. Greybeard Training
Master Arngeir greets you and tests your Thu'um. He teaches you the shout Whirlwind Sprint (Wuld) and demonstrates learning a new Word.
- 1
Learn the words
The Greybeards inscribe two Words for Unrelenting Force (Ro, Dah) and teach Whirlwind Sprint. Use the shout to dash through the closing gate during the trial.
- 2
Spend dragon souls
Remember each Word needs a dragon soul to unlock. If you're short, hunt a wild dragon (they spawn once the main quest reaches this point).
3. The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller
As a final trial, Arngeir sends you to retrieve the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller from Ustengrav, a Nordic tomb to the northwest. Fight through draugr and a clever gate puzzle (use Whirlwind Sprint to cross the pressure-plate gates quickly).
When you reach the horn's pedestal, it's gone — replaced by a note asking you to meet "a friend" in Riverwood. This begins A Blade in the Dark and introduces Delphine, one of the last Blades. Bonus: Ustengrav also holds the Become Ethereal Word Wall.
4. Chapter Complete
Follow the note to the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood and rent the attic room. Delphine reveals herself, takes you to her hidden basement, and returns the horn. She suspects the Thalmor are behind the dragons' return — leading to the infiltration of their embassy.
