Beta, Ruleset, Faction: What to Decide Before 4 November

The beta

17 September to 23 October
Blizzard closed the beta at 10 AM Pacific on Friday 23 October — 19:00 in central Europe — two days later than the 21 October it first gave. It opened the cap at 20 and raised it to 30 on 1 October. Week one had the Skyborne start on Zephras Isle, every zone up to 20 and two of the new dungeons — Hall of Thanes (13–18) and Ruins of Lordaeron (15–20). The 1 October update added the Wetlands dungeon, Excavation Site, and the 8 October one the City of Dalaran. On 21 October Blizzard took the beta offline for a few hours for a stress test open to any World of Warcraft account, no subscription needed, on the launch servers.
Who got in
Players who opted in through the Battle.net account page, and buyers of the Epic pack or the Collection, which guaranteed a place. The Heroic pack did not.
Nothing carries over
Beta characters are beta characters, and the stress test's were deleted when it ended. It was a look, not a head start. And the beta account was the one thing you could lose there: Forever gives characters a first and a last name, and Blizzard forced a rename on combinations that broke its naming policy and, for names far outside its Code of Conduct, removed beta access altogether; its forum post said Customer Service would not assist with appeals.

Worth deciding

  1. Ruleset before anything else

There are no realms to pick, but the ruleset is the same commitment in a different coat: Normal if you want PvP on your own terms, PvP if you want the world to be dangerous, Roleplaying if you want the servers where people type in character. Hardcore is not available at launch, and moving into it later is not possible — only out of it.

  2. Faction, with the new pairs in mind

If the reason you play is a specific pairing — Undead Paladin, Dwarf Shaman — that decides the faction. The Skyborne are the only race that can go either way: you pick Horde or Alliance when you create the character, and that choice also sets the class list — Shaman only as a Horde Windshaper, Mage only as an Alliance High Order (Blizzard's Meet the New Skyborne post of 22 September 2026).

  3. The pack question

Only if you want a Skyborne or an early claim on your names; the beta ended on 23 October. The game is in the subscription. See the editions page.

  4. Reserve your names between 27 October and 3 November

Any pack, Heroic included, unlocks Early Name Reservation: from 27 October to 3 November you can create and customise up to three characters per account, across all rulesets, and names go first come, first served. It opens on the 27th at 1 PM Pacific in the Americas and at 18:00 CET in Europe. Without a pack you name yours on the 4th, in the queue with everyone else.

  5. A controller is a real option

Native Xbox controller support, no addon. If you have wanted to play WoW from a couch, this is the version that officially lets you.

  6. Clear the evening of the 4th

3 PM Pacific is midnight in central Europe. Expect launch-day queues on a game with no realms to spread them across; Blizzard's answer so far was a public stress test of the launch servers on 21 October.

What we'll add on launch day

  • The dungeon pages with bosses and loot, once they can be run.
  • The Skyborne starting quests on Zephras Isle; their classes and racials are already published.
  • The Legacy trees in full, node by node.
  • Whatever Blizzard says about Classic Era characters, the moment it says it.

Still to verify

Cross-checked on 19 September 2026 and re-checked on 22 September 2026 against Blizzard Watch, Warcraft Tavern, Guided.news, PC Gamer, Wowhead, Icy Veins and TweakTown, and against Blizzard's own pre-purchase article and ‘Beta Now Live’ notice, once more on 2 October 2026 against Blizzard's beta development notes of 1 October, and on 3 October 2026 against Dexerto's report of Blizzard's forum post on beta names, and on 22 October 2026 against Blizzard's stress-test and name-reservation posts, its forum notices on the stress test and the beta's new closing time, IGN's and Massively Overpowered's reports of that extension, Blizzard Watch on the stress test and name reservation, and Hotspawn and Massively Overpowered on the 8 October build. Fewer than three give some of it: the stress test on the launch servers and the deletion of its characters come from Blizzard and Blizzard Watch; the opening hours of name reservation from Blizzard, with Massively Overpowered giving the North American one. What is still unverified has to be confirmed in-game. Still to confirm in-game.
