💡
This page keeps to what Nintendo's pages and trailers for the remake say, plus what October's previews showed of the places. The story beats Nintendo has not described are left out, even where the 1998 original is well known: the remake has new dialogue and new scenes, so not every detail of the original story can be assumed to carry over.

The premise

  • The Triforce is a magical object made of three golden triangles standing for wisdom, power and courage. Legend says it grants the wish of whoever touches it, which has made it a source of endless conflict in Hyrule.
  • Ganondorf is scheming to steal the Triforce from the Sacred Realm and take over the world. To stop him, Link must become the Hero of Time and save the kingdom.
  • Link starts as a boy in the Kokiri Forest, the one Kokiri without a fairy of his own, until the Great Deku Tree summons him on a fated quest. The fairy Navi goes with him.
  • The ocarina is the key to the adventure: Nintendo describes its melodies as able to stir space and time, and the story unfolds across two different eras.

The characters Nintendo introduces

CharacterWho they are, in Nintendo's words
LinkA young boy summoned by the Great Deku Tree to set out on a fated quest.
NaviThe fairy companion who travels with Link.
Princess ZeldaThe young princess of Hyrule, who seeks to protect her kingdom.
GanondorfThe menacing leader of the Gerudo, who wants to seize the Triforce.
ImpaPrincess Zelda's attendant, and a member of the Sheikah.
SariaA Kokiri girl, and Link's childhood friend.
DaruniaThe hot-headed leader of the Gorons, who live inside Death Mountain.
RutoThe free-spirited princess of the Zora, a water people living upstream on Hyrule's main river.

The Sages

💡
Sages play a large part in the story of the 1998 original. Nintendo's pages and trailers for the remake have not described them, so this page does not say who they are or what they do here. That stays a discovery for the game.

The land of Hyrule

🌳 Kokiri Forest
Link's home, where the game opens and where the Great Deku Tree stands. It has a similar layout to the 1998 original, with much more detail.
🌾 Hyrule Field
The central meadow at the heart of the kingdom, the way to every other region. Nintendo lists bustling towns, a foreboding volcano, a picturesque lake and a harsh desert beyond it.
🏰 Castle Town
The market town below the castle, now one connected place that you see with a free camera.
🌋 Death Mountain
The mountain where Darunia's Gorons live.
🌊 Where the Zora live
Upstream on Hyrule's main river, home of Princess Ruto's people.
🌙 Day and night
Time passes wherever Link is, and new faces and foes may turn up after sunset.

How the story is told

  • Cutscenes are fully voiced and the dialogue has been expanded, says Nintendo. Previews describe Kokiri, Castle Town people and shopkeepers with more to say than before.
  • Threads of Time recaps the story so far and fills in a grand tapestry of Link's journey as you go, so you can look back at what has happened.
  • The new look gives Hyrule's people far more detailed faces and clothes. Link's new face divided opinion after the September Direct.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 22 October 2026 against Nintendo's own pages for the remake (Nintendo of America's store page and its 14 October 2026 overview trailer news, Nintendo UK and Nintendo France), with the June 2026 reveal reports by Game Informer and Polygon, the 8 September 2026 Zelda Direct reports by Game Informer, IGN and The Verge, and the 14 October 2026 previews by IGN, Nintendo Life, VGC and NPR for the places, the voiced cutscenes and the new dialogue. The character descriptions are Nintendo's own, from its UK page in English. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it.
