Getting Started

Shadows is built around a split that most Assassin's Creed games only gesture at: Naoe and Yasuke are not two skins on one moveset. One is a shinobi who avoids fights; the other is a samurai who ends them. The map is designed for both, and four collectible types are locked to one or the other.

The two characters

🥷 Naoe
The shinobi half. Stealth, grappling hook, prone movement and rooftops. She is who you play when the answer is to not be seen — and the only one who can do Kuji-kiri and Hidden Trails.
🗡️ Yasuke
The samurai half. Heavy weapons, front doors and a fight you are meant to win. He is the only one who can perform Katas and Horse Archery.
🔄 Swapping
You choose between them for most of the game. If a collectible will not appear, the usual reason is that you are exploring with the wrong one.
🏯 Castles play twice
The same fortress is an infiltration puzzle for Naoe and a straight assault for Yasuke, which is the clearest demonstration of why the split is not cosmetic.

Where to start

  • Izumi Settsu is the opening province and the gentlest introduction to how the map is laid out.
  • Iga is Naoe's home ground and rewards the stealth toolkit early.
  • Yamashiro — Kyoto's province — is the densest region in the game at 48 collectibles, so it is worth saving until you have both characters and their upgrades.
  • Kii is the other heavy one at 45, mountainous and slow to cross.
  • The remaining provinces — Omi, Harima, Yamato, Wakasa and Tamba — fill in around those.

What to know before you commit

  1. Four types are character-locked

Kuji-kiri and Hidden Trails are Naoe's; Katas and Horse Archery are Yasuke's. A completionist run means swapping deliberately rather than favouring one.

  2. Kuji-kiri are a rhythm game

Each is a sequence you press to a repeating chime, and the prompts fade as it goes until you are working from memory. Each gives 1 Knowledge Point and 500 XP, and there are 22.

  3. Knowledge Points gate abilities

That is what makes the meditation spots worth the detour rather than flavour.

  4. Legendary Chests are the gear

Yamashiro alone holds ten of them, which is another reason to come back to it late rather than early.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 7 September 2026 against PowerPyx's 100% collectibles guide and its per-region pages for Kii and Yamashiro, plus the Fextralife Shadows wiki, which agree on the nine provinces, on the 22 Kuji-kiri and their 1 Knowledge Point and 500 XP reward, on the four character-locked collectible types, and on the Kii and Yamashiro collectible totals of 45 and 48. PowerPyx's own guide says '21 types' while listing 22 categories; this guide lists what is enumerated rather than repeating the headline number. What is still unverified is the only thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
