The setup, without spoilers
How to start it
Play to the end of Transmission
The expansion opens after the main job Transmission, the Voodoo Boys job in Pacifica in Act 2. Whatever you decided with the Voodoo Boys, Songbird calls afterwards and starts the first job, Dog Eat Dog. The journal job Phantom Liberty lists what is still missing if the call has not come.
Go to Dogtown
After the call, head for the Stadium Parking terminal at the entrance to Pacifica. Turning Songbird down at first does not lock you out: the job still gives you a waypoint to Dogtown.
Or skip ahead
From the main menu, a new game can jump straight to the expansion with a new character already levelled for it, a choice CD Projekt announced with Update 2.0. You start outside the Voodoo Boys' chapel in Pacifica with a set of gear, but you cannot edit the character's attributes at the start.
Finish it before the point of no return
The expansion happens before the final job of the base story, so an old save that has already finished the game can play it from the point before the last mission.
What it adds
- Dogtown, a walled-off district inside Pacifica, with its own gigs from the fixer Mr. Hands, Increased Criminal Activity jobs and an apartment for V.
- The Relic skill tree, unlocked by Songbird, with points from data terminals rather than levels.
- A level cap of 60 instead of 50: ten more attribute and perk points.
- Airdrops in Dogtown that drop iconic weapons and cyberware, and repeatable vehicle contracts for El Capitan that unlock new cars at AUTOFIXER.
- More vehicles with mounted weapons, new weapons such as the HA-4 Grit and HA-7 Warden, and new cyberware, including the Chrome Compressor operating system.
- A story of four endings of its own, King of Wands, King of Swords, King of Cups and King of Pentacles, and a new ending for the base game, The Tower. The Endings page has what decides them, with a spoiler warning.
What the reviews said
| Outlet | Score | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| IGN (Matt Kim, 25 September 2023) | 9/10 | Better storytelling and performances on top of the much-improved 2.0 gameplay; finally close to what the reviewer had hoped for in 2020. |
| PC Gamer (Ted Litchfield, 20 September 2023) | 87/100 | It does not reinvent Cyberpunk 2077, but it is CD Projekt firing on all cylinders to tell a great RPG story. |
