- Game
- The 2002 GameCube remake of the 1996 Resident Evil, and its 2015 HD Remaster.
- Characters
- Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, each with a campaign of their own.
- Difficulty
- Picked by answering a question at the start; the first answer is Normal.
- Golden rule
- Burn or behead the zombies you kill, or they come back as Crimson Heads.
Which game this guide covers
- This guide is for Resident Evil as Capcom remade it for the GameCube in 2002, and for the HD Remaster of that remake released in 2015 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC, and in 2019 for Nintendo Switch.
- It is not a guide to the 1996 PlayStation original. The remake tells the same story in the same mansion, but it changes puzzles, adds areas and enemies, and adds the Crimson Heads.
- The trophies and achievements only exist in the HD Remaster. The GameCube and Wii versions have none.

The difficulty question
- A new game does not show a difficulty menu. It asks how you like your games and gives you descriptions to choose from. On the HD Remaster the first answer is Normal, the second Easy and the third Very Easy.
- One site says Very Easy and Easy give you fewer enemies, more ammunition, more healing items and more ink ribbons than Normal.
- Hard opens after a clear (the guides differ on whether it must be on Normal; see Unlockables), from the Once Again option on the cleared save. The extra modes open the same way; see the Unlockables page.
Habits that keep you alive
- Saving uses an Ink Ribbon at a typewriter, and ribbons are limited. Save before hard fights rather than in every room.
- Item boxes are linked in the normal modes: what you put in one box can be taken out of any other.
- Avoid fights you do not need. Ammunition is scarce, and many zombies can be dodged.
- A zombie you kill can rise again later as a Crimson Head, faster and far more dangerous. Burn the body with kerosene and the lighter, or destroy its head, to stop that.
- Defensive items such as the Dagger do not use an inventory slot and fire when an enemy grabs you. You can set them to be used automatically or by hand.
- The HD Remaster has the original tank controls and an alternate scheme where you push the stick in the direction you want to go. You can switch during play.
Two smaller tips
- One guide says you run a little faster with no weapon equipped.
- One guide says to start every new run from the cleared save, with Once Again, so that the unlocks you have earned carry over.
