Skills & Perks

Skyrim has 18 skills across three guardian archetypes. You level a skill by using it; every skill-up contributes to your character level, and each level grants a perk point plus a choice of +10 Health, Magicka or Stamina.

⚔️

The Warrior (6)

One-Handed · Two-Handed · Archery · Block · Heavy Armor · Smithing. Raw combat and crafting your own gear.

🔮

The Mage (6)

Destruction · Restoration · Alteration · Illusion · Conjuration · Enchanting. Spells for every situation.

🗡️

The Thief (6)

Light Armor · Sneak · Lockpicking · Pickpocket · Speech · Alchemy. Stealth, subtlety and coin.

The Perk System

Each skill has its own perk tree, shaped like a constellation. Perks unlock only when your skill reaches the required rank (e.g. the powerful Destruction "Augmented Flames/Frost/Shock" perks need skill level 30, with their rank-2 upgrades needing 60). You get one perk point per character level, so plan a focused build rather than spreading thin. Every tree costs a different number of points to fill completely, since several perks have multiple ranks: Smithing is the cheapest at 10 perks for 10 points, Enchanting needs 9 perks but 13 points, and Destruction needs 14 perks but 17 points. Across all 18 skills, maxing literally everything takes 251 perk points, which means reaching character level 252 — a target for a very small number of players, not a normal playthrough.

Legendary Skills

Once a skill hits 100, you can make it Legendary: it resets to 15 and refunds its perk points, letting you level infinitely. This mechanic was added in patch 1.9 (2012) on the original release — before it, the practical level cap without console commands sat around 81. It comes standard in the Special Edition (2016) and Anniversary Edition (2021), so only players still on an unpatched original release would ever be without it. This removes the old level cap — great for maxing every tree, but you temporarily lose that skill's power, so do it when you can afford the dip. Track your journey to 100 in every skill on our Skills Tracker.

Fast Leveling Tips

  • Standing Stones boost a whole archetype's XP by 20% — the Warrior Stone covers Smithing, Heavy Armor, Block, Two-Handed, One-Handed and Archery; the Mage Stone covers the six magic skills; the Thief Stone covers Light Armor, Sneak, Lockpicking, Pickpocket, Speech and Alchemy. Grab the right stone for your build.
  • Trainers let you buy up to 5 skill levels per character level, but none of them will train a skill past 90 — the last ten points always come from actually using the skill, reading skill books, or quest rewards. Pickpocket the gold back for free training.
  • Crafting loops (Alchemy → Enchanting → Smithing) level fast and make each other stronger.
  • Sleep in a bed you own for the Well Rested +10% skill-gain bonus, or in the same building as your spouse for Lover's Comfort's +15% — both last 8 in-game hours, and stack with a Standing Stone's 20% rather than replacing it.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 6 September 2026 against Fextralife's Destruction perk page, ScreenRant's level-cap breakdown and a Skyrim skills community summary — which agree on the 251-perk-point/level-252 figure to max every perk, the 14-perk/17-point shape of the Destruction tree, patch 1.9 (2012) as when Legendary skills arrived, the 5-level-per-character-level training cap with a hard 90 ceiling from trainers, and the 10%/15% Well Rested and Lover's Comfort bonuses. Nothing here needed correcting. What is still unverified is the only thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
