Spells are grouped by colour in your loadout. Match a spell's type against an enemy's coloured shield to break it instantly, then chain into your combos.

The Killing Curse — an instant kill on almost any enemy.
Two ways of grouping, and both are real
The colours above are the combat axis — match the colour to break a shield. The
spell book sorts by a different taxonomy of seven categories, which is why a spell listed under Control here can be
filed as Transfiguration there. Neither is wrong; they answer different questions.
Essential — 8
The largest group, and all story-taught
Damage — 5
The red ones above
Control — 4
Fewer than the yellow list above, because Transfiguration is counted apart
Transfiguration — 3
Its own category in the book
Unforgivable — 3
Crucio, Imperio, Avada Kedavra
Utility — 7
Lumos, Reparo, Disillusionment, Wingardium Leviosa, Nab-Sack and the two beast-care spells — the seventh category this page had left off
You can carry sixteen

Which reframes the loadout advice on this page: the colour-matching
above stops being a juggling act once you have the slots, because you can keep one of each colour permanently
equipped and still have room for utility. Spending Core points early is worth more than it looks.
Still to verify
Cross-checked on 5 September 2026 against PowerPyx, Game8 and a Fandom category count —
which agree on Essential 8, Damage 5, Control 4, Force 4, Transfiguration 3 and Unforgivable 3, and on the
sixteen-spell maximum from the four Core-tree Spell Knowledge talents. Utility was missing from this page
entirely; the sources disagree on whether it stands alone at 7 or splits into a 4-spell Utility group plus a
3-spell Beast Grooming group, but they agree the game's own menu uses seven categories, which only balances at
34 total spells if Utility is the single 7-spell group added above. The category a given spell falls into is the
detail most likely to be off, since our list groups by loadout colour. What is still unverified is the only
thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
