Puzzles And Why Codes Do Not Travel

Many of the combinations in Silent Hill 2 change with the puzzle difficulty you picked, and the Bug Room code is random for every playthrough. A guide that hands you a four-digit code may be answering a different setting, so this page teaches the method instead.

Read this before looking anything up

If a walkthrough gives you a flat number for a locked box, check whether it matches what your own note says. When it does not, the puzzle differs for your difficulty or your playthrough, and the clue in your hands is the only correct source.

How to work them

  • Every combination has its clue somewhere you have already been. The map remembers the rooms; walk them again before searching a wiki.
  • Riddles are rewritten by puzzle difficulty, so a solution written for Hard will not match your Standard run word for word.
  • Examined notes stay in the inventory. Nothing is ever lost by reading a clue twice.

Sources

Two difficulties, and only one of them is reversible

Puzzle difficulty cannot be changed once you have chosen it. Combat can: switch it whenever you like and reload your most recent save. Puzzles are a one-way door for the whole playthrough, and the two settings are entirely independent — you can play Hard puzzles with Light combat, or the reverse.
Puzzle settingWhat it changes
LightHints and clues sit in plain sight
StandardSubtler hints — the intended balance
HardVague, enigmatic wording. Genuinely difficult, not just longer
This is also the mechanical reason for the warning above: the answers to several puzzles, riddles and code prompts differ by difficulty setting. A solution written for Hard is not a solution for your Standard run — it is the answer to a different question.

One worked example of what «rolled for your save» means

The Bug Room code always contains the digits 2, 3 and 9 — every source we found agrees on that much. They do not agree on the order: some guides say Light and Standard always resolve to 923 and only Hard shuffles the three digits, others say the order is rolled for every playthrough regardless of difficulty. Try 923 first if you are on Light or Standard, but keep your own note as the fallback — it is the only source that cannot be wrong for your save.

Still to verify

Cross-checked on 5 September 2026 against a Game8/GameRant/GameSpot composite — which agree on the three puzzle settings (Light, Standard, Hard) and that puzzle difficulty locks in at New Game while combat difficulty stays changeable mid-run. They disagree on the Bug Room digit order: Game8 says it is randomised on every difficulty, GameRant says Light and Standard always land on 923 and only Hard shuffles it, so this page now gives 923 as a starting guess rather than a rule. What is still unverified is the only thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
