What kind of game it is

💡
Henry Townshend wakes up locked in his own flat, Room 302 of South Ashfield Heights. The front door is locked from the inside and he cannot get out. Then a hole opens in the washroom wall, and it leads into strange other worlds full of monsters and Ghosts. You keep crawling back through holes to Room 302, which works as your hub. In the second half of the game you also escort your neighbour Eileen. GOG's store page credits Team Silent as the developer and Konami as the publisher.

PlayStation 2 and Xbox in North America

The sources give different dates. Silent Hill Memories lists 7 September 2004 for both the PS2 and the Xbox version in North America. The Silent Hill Wiki on Fandom gives 4 September 2004 in its release box, and 17 September 2004 in its opening paragraph.

How Room 302 works

  • It is the only place you can save, at the notebook on the small table in the living room.
  • It has the item chest. Two guides say you can only carry ten items, so you will be back at the chest often.
  • For the first half of the game, standing in the apartment slowly refills your health. That stops in the Hospital World, and the flat starts filling with hauntings instead. See the Hauntings page.
  • Two guides note that you see Room 302 in first person, while the rest of the game is in third person.
  • Memos keep turning up under the front door and around the flat. One guide counts 52 memos in the game and says they count towards your ranking at the end.

Monsters and Ghosts

  • Monsters die like in any Silent Hill game. Knock one down, then stomp on it before it gets up; two guides stress the stomp.
  • Ghosts cannot be killed. Hitting one only knocks it down for a while. Most of the time it is better to run past.
  • To deal with a Ghost for good you need a Sword of Obedience, which pins it down. Silver Bullets, Holy Candles and Saint Medallions also work against Ghosts. The Weapons page has the details.

Fighting

  • Melee carries this game. Ammo is scarce, and two guides build their advice around a good melee weapon rather than the guns.
  • Hold the attack button to charge a stronger swing. Two guides use it for crowds and tough enemies.
  • Two guides say there are three difficulty levels: Easy, Normal and Hard. One guide says the level changes the fighting, not the puzzles; another says that after you die, the game makes the enemies a little weaker on Easy and Normal.

Your first minutes

  1. Search the flat

Open the fridge: two guides say it holds a Wine Bottle, a poor first weapon, and Chocolate Milk, which you will need later in the Forest World. Keep the milk.

  2. Take the Steel Pipe

When the hole opens in the washroom wall, take the Steel Pipe and crawl through. It is your weapon for the first worlds.

  3. Hold on to healing items

Two guides advise saving healing items in the first half, while the apartment still heals you, because you will need them once it stops.

  4. Know the soft reset

Two guides give the PS2 soft reset: hold Start, Select, L1, R1, L2 and R2 together to go back to the main menu.

Playing it today

GOG has sold the PC version since 2 October 2020. Its changelog lists later updates, among them one on 20 March 2025 that, in GOG's words, restored all missing hauntings, and its store page lists English, German, Spanish, French and Italian, with both audio and text. One guide puts a first run at about nine hours.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 24 October 2026 against Andrew Haffenden's (Conquerer) versions, playing-the-game and FAQ pages as published on Silent Hill Memories, IGN's Silent Hill 4: The Room wiki guide, the Silent Hill Wiki on Fandom, GOG's store page and changelog, and Tom Phillips' Eurogamer news story of 2 October 2020. Dates: 17 June 2004 from Silent Hill Memories, IGN's guide and the Fandom wiki; PC in North America from Silent Hill Memories and GOG; Europe from Silent Hill Memories and the Fandom wiki; the GOG date from GOG, Silent Hill Memories and Eurogamer. Where the rest of the page says two guides, they are Silent Hill Memories and IGN's guide, except that the ten-item limit and the first-person view come from Silent Hill Memories and the Fandom wiki. One guide means Silent Hill Memories, except that the weaker enemies after a death come from IGN's guide. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it.
