WALKTHROUGH: CHAPTER 2 OF 14

Chapter 2: A New Journey Begins

Kalm and the Grasslands

Chapter Overview

Party: Cloud, Barret, Tifa, Aerith and Red XIII — the last one playable for the first time.
Key unlocks: Queen’s Blood, weapon upgrades, the party level, the item transmuter, world intel and Chadley, chocobos, and the relationship system with its three-tier dialogue choices.
Watch for: Talk to all four party members in Kalm before the clock tower with Aerith: the tower locks the town, and those conversations are the first relationship points of the game.

1. Kalm

A morning in town that opens half the game’s systems, one shop at a time.

  • 1

    Broden, and the card game

Leave the room, talk to the innkeeper. Queen’s Blood is unlocked the moment you step out; the tutorial and the first opponents are around the square.

  • 2

    The four conversations

Tifa by the mako tank in the village-centre plaza, Barret at the Rusty Arrow, Red XIII by the south-west entrance, Aerith at Maghnata Books. Each has a best answer; each one is a point toward the Gold Saucer date.

  • 3

    Two shops that unlock systems

Sekvacarsa Weapons turns on weapon upgrades; the bookshop explains synergy skills and the party level that gates the folios.

  • 4

    The clock tower

Climb it with Aerith. Kalm is closed after this, so everything above comes first.

  • 5

    Out through the shelter

Broden gets you out over the rooftops; the item transmuter is unlocked at the inn on the way. Three laurel sprigs in the shelter, then the Grasslands.

2. The Grasslands

The first open region and the template for the other five: towers, Chadley, a chocobo, a ranch.

  • 1

    The first tower

Chadley at the first Remnawave tower explains world intel. Climb it and the district fills in: fiend intel, a lifespring, a summon crystal.

  • 2

    Bill’s Ranch

Piko has escaped; catch him with the greens you are given, hand him to Billy and you have a chocobo and a whistle. One lap of Hustle de Chocobo opens the ranch’s rewards and the whole region.

  • 3

    The five side quests

Flowers from the Hill, A Rare Card Lost, Lifeline in Peril, Livestock’s Bane, Where the Wind Blows — from the Kalm notice board and the ranch. They pay party experience and relationship points that are worth more now than later.

  • 4

    Three weapons in chests

Sleek Saber for Cloud at the abandoned dock, Timeless Rod for Aerith beside Chloe at the ranch, Hi-Caliber Rifle for Barret on the swamp island.

  • 5

    Titan

Three crystals in the region weaken him; beat him in Chadley’s simulator for the first summon materia. Wind.

3. The swamp and the serpent

South, into the marsh, and the boss that ends the region.

  • 1

    Midgardsormr

Weak to ice. It dives and resurfaces; bank ATB under the water and spend it when it rears to charge its flame, because the cranial dome it exposes then is the weak point. Synergy abilities push the stagger.

  • 2

    The Mythril Mine

The tunnel at the far side of the swamp is chapter 3. Everything in the Grasslands stays available; chapter 12 reopens it with a sixth quest.

4. Bosses

  • Titan (optional): Chadley’s simulator, weakened per crystal found. Wind; break the shield, interrupt the Empowering Flame.
  • Midgardsormr: Ice. The cranial dome when it rears up; ATB banked while it is under.

5. Before you leave
