WALKTHROUGH: CHAPTER 1 OF 14

Chapter 1: Fall of a Hero

Nibelheim, five years ago

Chapter Overview

Party: Cloud, with Sephiroth as a guest and Tifa as guide; a short interlude with Zack first.
Key unlocks: Synergy skills, the Punisher counter, the piano, and the materia the tutorial hands out: Wind, Level Boost, HP Up, Empowerment, Spare Change, Magnify, Precision Defense Focus, Auto-Cast, Comet.
Watch for: The nine materia in this chapter are for this chapter only: nothing found here carries over to chapter 2.

1. Nibelheim, before

The chapter opens on a rescue interlude and then on the village as it was: quiet, small, and full of the people the rest of the game keeps bringing up.

  • 1

    Walk the village

The old water tower, the Strife and Lockhart houses, the Nidhogg Inn where Zangan is drinking. The Lockhart piano is the first piano in the game; play it once so the minigame is unlocked later.

  • 2

Take the mountain path with Tifa

Insectoid Chimeras on the slope, and two materia on the way up: Wind and Level Boost. Tifa is your guide, not your party member — the fights are Cloud and Sephiroth.

  • 3

    Learn synergy on the way

The game introduces synergy skills here with Sephiroth beside you. Use them; the Shinra-8 will assume you know them and never explain them again.

2. The Mt. Nibel reactor

A Shinra facility with a mako-gas puzzle in two halves and the first real boss.

  • 1

    The first gas puzzle

Use the purifier to clear the contaminated rooms. The HP Up materia is not behind the gas: it waits beside the bench at the top of the cliff climb, once the rope bridge has given way.

  • 2

    Cross the ravine

Planks, a few enemies, and two more materia: Empowerment and Spare Change. A Zu waits at the end — it is the fight that teaches synergy skills against a flyer.

  • 3

    The second gas puzzle

Same idea, higher up. Precision Defense Focus and Auto-Cast come before it, not after: the first on a ledge just past the Zu, the second at the top of a short flight of stairs on the way to the gas.

  • 4

    Materia Guardian

Weak to fire. It grabs: dodge the grab or free the ally it caught and it is pressured. With Sephiroth on your side it cannot kill you, so use it to learn Punisher stance and the counter.

  • 5

    The reactor core

Down the elevator, hold the valve shut. What Sephiroth reads in the core is the rest of the story.

3. The manor and the fire

The chapter ends the way everyone who played the original knows it ends. It is playable, not narrated, and there is nothing to find in it.

  • 1

    The Shinra Manor

Down to the cavern under the manor for the conversation that turns him.

  • 2

    Nibelheim, burning

Crawl through the wreckage toward the reactor. No fights that matter; the sequence is the point.

  • 3

    The roof

Back in the present, Tifa on the inn roof, and a night’s rest. Chapter 2 opens in Kalm.

4. Bosses

  • Zu: A flyer. Synergy skills with Sephiroth are the lesson; Cloud’s Aerial Slash is the tool.
  • Materia Guardian: Fire. Free a grabbed ally or dodge the grab to pressure; a harmless place to learn the counter.

5. Before you leave

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 16 September 2026 and re-checked on 1 October 2026 against the guides of Game8, PowerPyx, Vandal and EliteGuias. What is still unverified is the only thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
