What a First-Time Hunter Actually Needs to Know

Starting out

🗡️ Which weapon should I start with?
Sword and Shield, and it is not close. It is fast, it does not lock you into long committed combos, it can block, and it lets you use items without sheathing. Dual Blades, Great Sword, Lance and the Bowguns are the other forgiving picks. All fourteen are tracked on their own page here.
🔒 Am I stuck with it?
No. Monster Hunter has never locked you into a weapon — you switch at the box between hunts, for free, forever. The reason people agonise is that each weapon is a different game, not that the choice is permanent.
📚 Do I need to have played the others?
No. Wilds is a deliberate entry point and it explains more than any previous game in the series. Knowing World or Rise helps with vocabulary, not with anything you need.
⏱️ How long is it?
Around 13 to 20 hours to the end of Low Rank, where the story wraps up. Roughly 40 to reach the High Rank story boss. After that the game is the game — Monster Hunter's real length has never been a campaign number.

The two new systems

🎯 Focus Mode and wounds
Focus Mode highlights the wounds you have opened on a monster and lets you aim at them, and it enables Focus Strikes — special attacks that cash those wounds in for real damage.
⚠️ And its cost, which nobody mentions
Focus Mode narrows your field of view. You are looking at one spot on one monster, which is exactly when the second monster arrives. Overusing it is a common way to die in Wilds, and the fix is discipline rather than settings.
🦖 The Seikret
Your mount. It carries you to the monster on its own if you let it, and — the part people miss — it carries a second weapon. You can swap mid-hunt, which changes what a hunt can be.

The habits that actually matter

  1. Carry the second weapon on purpose

The Seikret's second slot is not a spare. Pairing a weapon that opens wounds with one that punishes them, or a melee weapon with a ranged option for a flying phase, is the system Wilds is built around.

  2. Use Focus Mode in bursts

Open wounds normally, then focus to cash them. Living in Focus Mode is what gets you hit by things you never saw.

  3. Do not skip the locales

The five locales are tracked here for a reason: each has its own endemic life, gathering and monsters, and the crafting you need later comes from the ones you walked past.

Still to verify

Cross-checked on 10 September 2026 against Capcom's own Wilds pages, the Monster Hunter Wiki, Game Rant's Focus Mode explainer and the length reporting at Game8 and GameSpot, which agree on the 28 February 2025 release across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, on the Seikret carrying a second weapon, on Focus Mode highlighting wounds at the cost of field of view, and on roughly 13 to 20 hours to the end of Low Rank with about 40 to the High Rank story boss. What is still unverified is the only thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
