The Forbidden Lands, and the Boy Who Came Out of Them

The setup

🏜️ The Forbidden Lands
An uncharted region the Guild believed uninhabited. That belief is the premise: it turns out to be wrong, and the game is about how wrong.
🧒 Nata
A boy found near the border some years before the game starts. He says his village was attacked by a monster — which is a problem for the Guild, because there was not supposed to be a village.
👻 The White Wraith
What Nata calls the thing that destroyed his home. Finding out what it is, is the expedition you are on.

Why this is unusual for the series

Monster Hunter stories are traditionally a frame: a village needs a monster dealt with, and everything interesting happens in the hunt. Capcom described Wilds as the most story-driven entry in the series, and it is — the expedition has characters who change their minds, and the monsters are tied to what happened here rather than being a bestiary with a quest board attached.

Further in

  • Nata's people are called the Keepers, and they have been sheltering in ruins rather than a village.
  • Those ruins are Wyveria — an ancient civilisation that was in the Forbidden Lands long before the Guild decided nobody was.
  • Wyveria made the Guardians: a group of powerful monsters that are engineered rather than evolved.
  • Arkveld, the monster the marketing is built around, is one of them.

The 32 monsters are the other story

This guide's monster tracker lists all thirty-two large monsters with their species and the locale each lives in, which is the version of the lore that actually changes how you play: what a monster is tells you what it does. The narrative above is the frame around that, and the frame is the part that spoils.

Still to verify

Cross-checked on 10 September 2026 against Capcom's own Wilds pages, the Monster Hunter Wiki, Game Rant's Focus Mode explainer and the length reporting at Game8 and GameSpot, which agree on the 28 February 2025 release across PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, on the Seikret carrying a second weapon, on Focus Mode highlighting wounds at the cost of field of view, and on roughly 13 to 20 hours to the end of Low Rank with about 40 to the High Rank story boss. What is still unverified is the only thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
