Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) Puzzle Solutions: Clock Tower, Vaccine, Water Sample and More

Before you start

💡
Some puzzles in the original game change from run to run, so a fixed answer copied from somewhere else often fails. This page gives the method for those, and the fixed answers only where the guides agree that the puzzle is always the same.

The Clock Tower gems

  1. What you need

Three gems, the Obsidian, Amber and Crystal Balls, and the room with three clocks: the past, the present and the future; the present is the middle one, and one guide puts the past on the left and the future on the right. The goal is to make the middle clock read twelve o'clock.

  2. How it works

Each clock has a tray. A gem placed in a tray moves the middle clock's hands back or forward by a set number of hours, depending on the gem and on which clock you put it in. One guide says the hands start in a different place each time.

  3. Work it out

Note the hour the middle clock shows, then pick one gem for each tray so the three changes add up to the hours between that time and twelve. Use the table below.

  4. The reward

When the middle clock reaches twelve it opens and gives you the Gold Gear. Two guides add that you combine it with the Silver Gear from the tower's gear room to make the Chronos Gear.

Gem values

GemPastPresent (middle)Future
Obsidian Ball−2 hours+2 hours+4 hours
Amber Ball−3 hours+3 hours+6 hours
Crystal Ball−1 hour+1 hour+2 hours

Example

  • If the middle clock reads five, you need seven hours. Crystal in the past (−1), Obsidian in the present (+2) and Amber in the future (+6) add up to +7.
  • If it reads eleven, you need one hour. Amber in the past (−3), Obsidian in the present (+2) and Crystal in the future (+2) add up to +1.

The other puzzles

Hospital vaccine (as Carlos)
Put the Medium Base in the synthesizer and set the levers I, III and A to get the Vaccine Medium. Combine it with the Vaccine Base to make the Vaccine for Jill.
Clock Tower music box
Two guides: the music box plays a tune and you flip its switches up or down until it matches. It gives the Chronos Chain, which joins the Winder Key to make the Chronos Key.
Gas station oil panel
Two guides: one letter on the panel is highlighted. Pressing a letter also toggles the lights next to it; the goal is to light the highlighted letter alone. Solving it gives the Machine Oil.
Factory water sample
Two guides: put the Water Sample in the machine and slide the three bars, A, B and C, until together they match the picture beside it. The answer changes from run to run.
Worm tunnel ladder
Flip the two switches in the side passages, then use the ladder panel to climb out. The worm attacks while you do it.
Sales office computer
One guide: the password is the product name shown in an Umbrella advert on the office's video, and it varies between three names.
City Hall gate
Two guides: two gems, one from the police station and one from the restaurant or the press building, go into the broken clock that holds the City Hall gates shut.

The mayor's statue and the fountain

  • At City Hall, the mayor's statue hands you a book. Placed in the slot by the electrified fountain, it lets you take the compass there without a shock. Give the compass back to the statue for a Battery, which powers the elevator to the substation.
  • Guides name them the Book of Wisdom and the Future Compass, or the Bronze Book and the Bronze Compass.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 24 October 2026 against the GameFAQs guides by MrSensible and peach_freak, IGN's guide to the game and Evil Resource. The gem values and the method come from MrSensible, peach_freak and IGN; the gears from peach_freak and IGN, and the changing start position from MrSensible alone. The music box, the oil panel and the water sample come from peach_freak and IGN; the sales office password from IGN alone; the gem locations for the City Hall gate from MrSensible and IGN; the clock positions from peach_freak alone. The quick gem charts in some guides are left out because the puzzle changes from run to run. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it.
