Before you buy
Can I play it alone?
Yes. Steam lists it as single-player and online co-op, and Jagex's site says you can play alone or with friends. One 1.0 reviewer who played solo found the early hours punishing, with aggressive enemies and little stamina, and thought a group makes it easier.
Do I need to have played RuneScape?
No. It is set on a new continent and tells its own story, with RuneScape characters such as the Wise Old Man, Doric, Vannaka and Zanik. A reviewer returning from Old School RuneScape enjoyed the familiar faces; another review warns that the story can be hard to follow for new players.
How long is it?
One review puts the single-player campaign at over 50 hours, and the skills go on to level 99 after that. The other reviews do not give a length.
Will the price go up now that it is out?
No. Jagex kept it at $29.99 / £24.99 at 1.0, and says Luminance and the monthly updates are free. The Deluxe Edition adds armour, a cape, helms and decorations, listed on the Platforms & Editions page.
Is it an MMO?
No. Each world is a separate copy of Ashenfall for a small group, hosted by a player or on a dedicated server. The Co-op & Servers page has the details, including where the sources differ on the group size.

Is there crossplay, and does my character carry over?
Crossplay, yes, since 1.0, chosen per world. Your character does not travel between platforms: one review found that a PlayStation 5 character cannot be picked up on Switch 2.
Can I build anywhere?
Almost. You can settle in any region, but not in the Scorned Wilderness raid area, where only the Rasthin's Rest hub allows building, and lodestones are banned in vaults and most of Dowdun Reach. Enemies raid bases from time to time.
Are there mounts?
Yes: the Terrorbird since Fellhollow and the flying carpet since Umbral Sands, plus mounts that some bosses drop. You do not earn Agility XP while riding.
Is there PvP?
Only if a world's host turns on Friendly Fire.
Do I need an account?
On Steam the game requires an Epic Online Services account, which can be linked to your Steam account, and agreement to Jagex's licence.
Where did Wardstones and healing potions go?
Jagex removed them in its June 2026 health rework. Food now heals at once, Sanguine Urns raise your maximum health, and stat potions remain.
What do I do after Kuldra?
Repeat the Scorned Wilderness raid for the rest of the Dragon gear, chase level 99 and the 50 Steam achievements, and wait for 1.0.1 in October and Luminance in winter. One review notes that the endgame offers little reason to keep going once you have the gear.
