Getting Started: The First Quests, Survival Basics and Choosing a World

First goal
The tutorial quests in Temple Woods, then Dragon Slayer: find and defeat Velgar, the first dragon.
Respawn
At your claimed bed, or at the lodestone in the Wise Old Man's temple if you have not claimed one.
Difficulty
Normal or Hard, chosen when you create a standard world and fixed after that.

Choosing a world

NormalHard
Hunger, thirst and restNever take your health below 1%Drain faster and can kill you
Skill XP on deathKeptXP beyond your current level is lost

World types

A standard world locks its difficulty and settings when you create it. A Custom world lets you tune the settings, such as faster XP or a harder game, and change them while you play. Creative mode has no limits: you cannot die and resources are unlimited, for building and exploring. Any world can be private, open to friends or listed publicly, and Friendly Fire turns on player-versus-player damage.

The tutorial quests

  1. First Steps

Starts by itself with a new character. Talk to the Wise Old Man in the temple; he offers to teach you the basics. You can refuse and find him later in Bramblemead Village, but the tutorial quests below are the fastest way to learn the systems.

  2. Getting Started

Doric, just outside the temple, teaches food and drink. Collect dirty water from the pond and boil it before drinking: dirty water makes you ill. Build a crafting table (4 ash logs) and craft a stone club (6 more ash logs and 8 stones). Logs lie under the trees and stones around the temple ruins.

  3. Ratcatcher

Vannaka, south of the windmill, wants food. Kill four giant rats by the windmill for raw rat meat, build a campfire from ash logs and stones, and cook it into rat roasts. The reward is a stone logging axe and a stone dagger.

  4. Rune Mysteries

Zanik, on the road east of Vannaka, teaches magic. Gather 50 ash logs, mine rune essence at a rune essence geyser with the stone pickaxe she gives you, build a rune altar and craft air and astral runes.

  5. On to Bramblemead

Meet the Wise Old Man on the first floor of a ruined building at the far end of Bramblemead Village to finish First Steps. Dragon Slayer, the first main quest, starts with him there.

Your first base

🛏️ Claim a bed
Your claimed bed is where you respawn. A base with a bed is also what the Sheltered achievement asks for. Bases can be raided by enemies, so one 1.0 review suggests building in a lower-level region rather than somewhere dangerous.
🪨 Lodestones
Lodestones are buildable fast-travel points. Building your first one wakes up the inactive lodestone in the temple. Each teleport costs law runes, more for a longer trip and a heavier pack, and some areas, such as most of Dowdun Reach and every vault, do not allow them.
🪦 Dying
You drop your items in a gravestone and have to walk back for them. Falls, poison and burning kill as surely as enemies. If you are stuck somewhere too hard, there is an emergency option to return to the first spawn point.
❤️ Sanguine Urns
Urns hidden around Ashenfall each raise your maximum health by 10, permanently, and the bonus carries to other worlds. They show on the compass when you are close.

What the reviewers wish they had known

  • Gathering is exact: you have to face a tree squarely to chop it, and only certain rocks can be mined; the decorative ones cannot.
  • Crafting chains are long and not explained. A bow needs coarse thread, and coarse thread needs a spinning wheel. The in-game recipe book helps.
  • Food can burn at low Cooking levels, and a quest that asks for cooked meat will not accept burnt meat.
  • Stamina runs out quickly when you sprint, and goblins attack in groups. Do not run far from base until you have armour.
  • Chickens, cows and kebbits no longer attack you unprovoked (a change from spring 2026), and since 1.0 the dire wolves and garou of Ghornfell hit a little less hard.

Cross-checked on 7 October 2026 against the RuneScape: Dragonwilds Wiki's pages on worlds, death, lodestones, Sanguine Urns, quests, First Steps, Getting Started, Ratcatcher and Rune Mysteries, Jagex's 1.0 release notes on Steam, and the 1.0 coverage of Pocket Tactics, Gfinity and GamesRadar+. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it.
