The patches, in order

DatePatchWhat it did
15 September1.0The full release, on consoles too. Jagex says the team fixed 2,665 bugs on the way to it.
18 September1.0.0.4A fix for world saves corrupting when you left a session, and for two crashes: casting a fishing rod at a player-made structure, and changing some settings. Switch 2 and the Jagex Launcher lost crossplay until the patch reached them.
Notes 23 September, aimed at the 25th1.0.0.5Fixes listed for worlds refusing a third player, the second raid attempt, raid deaths skipping a respawn point, the Abyssal Whip recipe for old characters, Sworn Servant in multiplayer and console saves corrupted by modded servers; DLSS and FSR on the Windows and Game Pass versions; Luminite ore usable for Divine Rocks. The Edit Appearance button was removed until saves were safe.
29 September1.0.0.6The Epic Games Store back in crossplay, a safeguard on saving characters, some corrupted worlds visible in the list again, and a fix for a crash when choosing Online play while offline.
8 October1.0.0.8Out on Xbox, PS5, the Epic Games Store, Steam, the Jagex Launcher and Switch 2 at once: a fix for world saves disappearing under certain conditions. Worlds that already disappeared stay hidden until 1.0.1. Dedicated servers need a restart to pick it up, and SteamCMD downloads of the patch for them were being rate-limited.
The week after 8 October1.0.1The next update. Jagex has promised more fixes to distant detail, a fix for the offline crash and Magic tree seeds, so you can grow your own. It should also bring back the worlds that disappeared, and lets corrupted characters join worlds again, with items and skill levels to make up for the lost progress.

Lost a world or a character?

⚠️
Jagex says it is working with each console's platform team to recover worlds that went missing in launch week, and that restored saves may come back with default settings: a Custom or Creative world can reappear as a Normal one, so look in your Normal world list. On 29 September it still called recovery work in progress. Patch 1.0.0.8 (8 October) stops worlds disappearing, and Jagex says update 1.0.1, the week after, should bring back the ones already gone and let corrupted characters join worlds again, with items and skill levels in compensation. It collects bug reports on its official Discord.

What comes next

  • Luminance, the winter content update, free like every update so far, with a new building kit. Jagex said in May that the Prayer skill would arrive with it in December.
  • Ranged is due extra attention between 1.0 and Luminance, and Jagex has hinted at a magic change with the words: Magic rocks. Literally.
  • Monthly updates continue after 1.0, Jagex says, as part of a multi-year plan for Ashenfall.
  • Plans for 2027 and the next saga were presented at RuneFest on 3 October 2026; they include Hunter and Slayer among four new skills.

The reviews, outlet by outlet

OutletScoreVerdict in brief
Pocket Tactics (Sam Comrie), 21 September9/10One of the most rewarding RPGs he has played; the lack of cross-progression and the soft image on Switch 2 are the main complaints.
Game8 (Third Mondigo), PC, 15 September86/100The best evolution of the series, with a rewarding grind and a fantastic open world; the story can be hard to follow and the endgame gives little reason to keep going.
Gfinity (Alexandria Lopez), PC, 15 September7/10The magic is the best part, but the tutorial quests are unclear and playing alone is punishing; it is better in a group.
GamesRadar+ (Joe Chivers), 21 SeptemberNot scoredImpressions: nothing egregiously wrong, but rigid and joylessly functional, and still underdone at 1.0.

Where the reviewers agree

Two of the four reviews single out the magic and its Skill Spells as the best part of the game. Three say it explains little, from long crafting chains to what a quest really needs, and the early hours are hard. The reviewer who played alone found it punishing and recommends a group. On Steam, recent user reviews were Mostly Positive on 7 October (76% of 3,666 in the last 30 days), below the overall 81%.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 7 October 2026 and re-checked on 9 October 2026 against Jagex's Steam announcements (the 1.0 release notes, the 1.0.0.4, 1.0.0.5, 1.0.0.6 and 1.0.0.8 notes, the 1.0 check-in survey of 1 October, the price announcement of 3 September and the roadmap update of 15 May), the Steam store page, Metacritic, the RuneScape: Dragonwilds Wiki for RuneFest, and the reviews of Pocket Tactics, Game8, Gfinity and GamesRadar+. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it.
