The point of no return, and the door that opens again behind it

💡
You can free-roam and find every collectible until the point of no return before the final mission, The Clash at Rendaino. A prompt warns you before you cross it. That alone would make this a game with a deadline — but there is a second safety net, and it is the reason there are zero missables: after the credits, selecting "Continue" from the main menu puts you back before that mission, with the world open again. So the point of no return is a pause, not a wall. One wrinkle in the wording: The Clash at Rendaino is called the final mission, yet a twenty-third chapter, The Way of the Sword, comes after it. Both describe the same thing — the final run begins at chapter 22, and everything from there is one sequence.

Which chapter opens which type

  • Chapter 2, The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu — the Charm of the Healer, the only Charm from the story.
  • Chapter 4, The Oni's Apprentice — the Wind-Whipper, the third Oni Armament, given automatically.
  • Chapter 8, Patching up the Pouch — Hozuki Pouch enhancement opens, through Okuni.
  • Chapter 11, What Lurks in the Shadows — Mysteries of Kyoto and Lion Dogs unlock; 44 collectibles do not exist before it.
  • Chance Encounters — they open with chapter 7, A Strength in Refuge, which makes the first two available: Pale Lights in a Night Sky and Clear Space, Clear Mind. The other sixteen are dated from chapter 13, Bloodbath on the Bridge, onward.
  • Chapter 13 through chapter 21 — the rest of the side content unlocks in waves behind Bloodbath on the Bridge, A Tempest at the Temple, To Live is to Suffer, Okuni's Kabuki Dance, The Demon on the Mount and In the Light of an Icy Moon.
  • Post-game — one collectible waits until after the credits: the twenty-third Genma Note, Yoshitsune's, behind Rokudo-chinnoji Temple. Genma-ologist cannot be finished before then.

What survives New Game+ and what does not

Read that table before you plan the second run

⚠️
The split is not arbitrary, and it decides what to finish before the credits. Skills, Charms, pouches, Genma Notes and Lion Dogs survive — so those trophies can be finished across two runs at leisure. Mysteries of Kyoto and Chance Encounters do NOT survive, which means Demystified and No Job Too Small have to be earned again from zero on a Carnage run if you leave them. And equipment enhancement does not survive either, so Dressed to Kill is the one collectible-funded trophy that genuinely rewards being finished on the first playthrough, in the free-roam window before The Clash at Rendaino.

What this site tracks

All eleven types have trackers here, 275 boxes in all. Seven are the types where a specific thing in a specific place is the point — Mysteries of Kyoto, Chance Encounters, Lion Dogs, Oni Armaments, Hozuki Pouches, Charms and Genma Notes, 116 items. The other four are the 159 upgrade materials — 54 Power Stones, 55 Oni Stones, 25 Fine Silk Cloths and 25 Tamahagane — each with its own tracker. They look fungible, but by the price lists every Power Stone, Fine Silk Cloth and Tamahagane has a use, and the Special Skill prices ask for 56 Oni Stones against the 55 located, so a missing box is a missing upgrade. Rewards for story chapters and side content cover more than half of each kind of stone but only about a third of the cloth and steel, which makes those two trackers mostly a map of chests. The Upgrades page covers what each material buys and the New Game+ deadline that applies to equipment.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 22 September 2026 and re-checked on 1 October 2026 against the guides of PowerPyx, Destructoid and Vandal; the material totals are this guide's addition of the listed prices. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it, and what the sources do not describe is not on this page.
