Issen, Deflect, and the Blade That Catches Fire

The defensive layer, as the official primer gives it

🛡️ Block costs stamina
Xbox Wire's official combat primer, published the day before launch: "Holding LB lets Musashi block most attacks (including ranged) from any angle, but every hit costs you stamina." Blocking is therefore a resource, not a default — which is why the Charm of Stamina's +10% recovery speed matters more than its size suggests.
✋ Parry breaks their stance
"Hit block just as an attack lands, and Musashi will sweep it away, usually leaving an enemy defenceless for a few precious seconds" (Xbox Wire). The parry is the opening-maker, and it is also what builds the Blazing meter.
💥 Deflect is a different button, and a different job
"Rather than a standard parry, this involves blocking and hitting A as an attack lands instead. A deflection won't break an enemy's stance, but it does a huge amount of stamina damage" (Xbox Wire). Parry for the opening, deflect to grind their stamina down — that is the whole distinction, and it is the one the Break Issen depends on.
🌀 Reflex Dodge
"Hitting B lets you perform a dodge, and doing it in the parry window kicks off a Reflex Dodge, a flashy maneuver" (Xbox Wire). The Reflex side of the build has its own gauge — the Charm of Dexterity raises the Reflex Gauge increase rate by 10%.
⚔️ Blade Barrages and Blade Locks
"If you land an attack at the exact same time as an enemy, you'll enter a Barrage — effectively a mini-duel" (Xbox Wire). To win it, press the other attack: "if you entered the Barrage with a light attack on X, hit the heavy attack on Y", and light if you entered with heavy (Xbox Wire).

Three kinds of Issen, and only one of them is the famous one

🗡️ Issen
The series' signature counter. Xbox Wire: "Issen involves starting an attack in the precise moment just before an enemy lands their blow… Musashi effectively teleports to the side and lands one of his most powerful blows." They are extremely hard to time but work on any enemy in the game, bosses included. Brutalist, a silver, asks for fifty of them.
🩸 Break Issen
The execution, and it is earned by deflecting rather than by timing an attack: "Deflections can eventually let you perform a Break Issen — a special attack that kills most weak enemies and can cut down bosses far faster" (Xbox Wire). It is a move that dismembers. The Berserker bronze wants three enemies killed with continuous Break Issens.
🔗 Chain Issen
Issens landed in sequence. It is named only in the trophy list — Flow State, for fifty kills with Chain Issen attacks — and in the final-boss advice, which recommends chaining Issen counters to harvest blue and purple souls quickly. No source we read gives the input or the window.

The two meters

🔵 Blazing State
"Parry enough attacks and you'll enter Blazing State, which can result in more health and stamina damage, nets you extra souls, and looks extremely cool" (Xbox Wire). The katana takes on a blue flame. The Burning Blade bronze wants fifty kills in that state, and the Blazing Charm adds three seconds to its duration, which is why that Charm compounds.
👹 Oni Awakened
The transformation, fed by its own Awakening Gauge. There is one place it is not optional: in Minamoto no Yoshitsune's third phase he cannot be damaged by any attack unless you are in your own Oni Awakening state. The advice there is to transform the moment the gauge fills, land Issen counters while transformed, and hold the finisher until the gauge is nearly spent, because a late finisher lands more hits. Oni's Oni wants fifty kills while awakened.
⚡ Oni Power is a third thing
The Charms treat the Awakening Gauge and the Oni Power Gauge as two separate meters — the Charm of Awakening raises one by 4%, the Charm of Oni Power the other by 4% — and Oni Power can be spent to extract purple souls. Nothing we read explains what else Oni Power does, so nothing more is claimed here.

The souls the gauntlet eats

ColourWhat it does
YellowHealth.
RedUpgrades. Red Souls are what Charm enhancement is paid in at Emma's Hall, alongside Favor.
BlueSpecial weapons — the Oni Armaments. Daidara siphons them off the floor if you leave them lying.
PurpleFeeds the Oni Power and Awakening gauges. Take purple over red when Yoshitsune's stamina breaks.

Colour is the language of the tells

💡
One vocabulary runs across all eighteen boss fights, and learning it once covers the whole game. A WHITE-GLOWING attack can only be parried or deflected — dodging does not help. A BLUE attack is a grab, and the counter is the circle button; on a few of them you add a direction on the left stick. MALICE-WREATHED means the enemy has entered its enhanced state, usually at half health, and its attack list has just grown. Breaking a guard is triangle and circle together. That is four rules, and they apply to every boss.

What the vaguest trophy requirements mean

RequirementTrophyWhat the sources actually give
Perform 50 Reflex CombosStop MotionEvade at the right time to fill the Reflex Gauge (right of the Oni Armament Gauge); once it is full, the next Reflex Dodge lets you unleash a Reflex Combo, and that is what counts.
Assassinate 20 enemiesSilent ViolenceWalk up behind an enemy and use the prompt to assassinate it — a one-hit kill; it counts if the enemy you kill has not detected you, and running alerts enemies unless you have the skill for sneaking while running.
Perform 50 Grab ReversalsUntouchableGrabs are signalled by a lightning effect around the grabbing limb, usually followed by a run-up; evade toward the enemy to reverse the grab.
Set three enemies ablaze at onceGenma GrillerUnlock the skill Firebird Flute: Charged Shot, charge the Flute, and fire into the middle of at least three crowded enemies.
Rescue 30 townspeopleCitizen SaviorCitizens are attacked by Genma at random all over Kyoto; defeat the Genma and then speak to the citizen, or it does not count.
Absorb 30+ souls at onceGet This Thing Off MeUse the Oni Arm's Absorb function to collect 30 individual orbs in one go — roughly six enemies' worth, whatever the orbs are worth.

What the reviews say about how it feels

  • IGN gave it the series' first 10/10, and its reviewer reports beating the game without using the assist systems — offered as evidence of how well the combat teaches itself.
  • Push Square, 9/10: "Light attacks, heavy attacks, dodging, blocks, parries, and special moves that require some kind of resource" — conventional on paper, carried by "incredible animation work" and "signature Capcom weightiness".
  • VGC, 3/5, is critical of nearly everything else but calls the last-second counterattack "a key tenet of the franchise and the best thing in Onimusha: Way of the Sword", and praises enemies that "move at speed while also being readable".
  • Director Satoru Nihei aimed for combat that is "accessible" yet "challenging" and deliberately distinct from Soulslikes, focused on "express[ing] the clashing of blades through the action", with real swordsmen used for motion capture.
  • The one mechanic every source agrees on is the Issen. It is the move the difficulty is built around, the move a silver trophy counts fifty of, and the move a Charm exists to strengthen.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 22 September 2026 against Capcom's official combat primer "The Many Means of Mastery" on Xbox Wire (3 September 2026), whose wording every quoted definition above is, and against the guides of PowerPyx and Destructoid, Wikipedia, and the reviews of IGN, Push Square and VGC. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it, and what the sources do not describe is not on this page.
