Difficulties, and What Comes After the Campaign

The difficulties

🟢 Normal
The default run. Everything is reachable and nothing is gated behind it.
🟡 Veteran
Normal with tougher enemies, chosen at character creation rather than unlocked. It is the same act structure, not a separate playthrough.
🟠 Elite
Unlocked by finishing the campaign. The second pass, and where 20 of the devotion shrines live.
🔴 Ultimate
The third pass and the level ceiling. With Forgotten Gods every shrine is available here, which is what makes a single-difficulty run to 55 devotion points possible.

The three endgames

🌀 The Crucible
A wave arena, sold as its own DLC rather than part of an expansion. Fangs of Asterkarn adds thirty more waves to it — and those thirty need the Crucible DLC to exist at all.
🌑 The Shattered Realm
Forgotten Gods' endgame: shards of increasing difficulty, entered from Act 7. The reason most people buy that expansion.
🔺 Ascendant
The mode Fangs of Asterkarn added in July 2026, built to push every dungeon and boss encounter past what Ultimate asks.

What actually changes, in numbers

DifficultyResistance penaltyWhat it means in play
Normal / VeteranNoneYour character sheet is your character sheet.
Elite−25% fire, cold, lightning, poison/acid and pierceThe five resistances you spent Normal ignoring are suddenly a quarter lower than the number you are reading.
Ultimate−50% on those five, and −25% on bleed, vitality, aether, chaos and life leechTen resistance types are now below their displayed value. This is why builds that felt finished on Elite fall apart here.

Why your build 'stops working'

The penalty is applied to you, not to the enemies, and it is why the standard advice is that resistances are the difficulty setting. A character walking into Elite with 60% fire resistance is walking in with 35%. Nothing about your damage changed and nothing about your skill tree is wrong — the number you were relying on quietly moved. Cap the five that Elite touches before you go, and the ten that Ultimate touches before you go there.

You do not have to replay to reach Ultimate

  1. One clear unlocks both

Since version 1.2.0, beating the base game's final boss on Normal unlocks Elite and Ultimate at once. You are not required to grind through Elite to see Ultimate.

  2. And a second character can skip straight in

With Forgotten Gods, a character who finishes Act 1 can talk to the Emissary and buy a Champion's or Savior's Merit — items that unlock Elite or Ultimate for another character from the start.

  3. Which is how the 55-point run works

Because every shrine exists on Ultimate, a fresh character started there can reach the devotion cap without touching the other two difficulties. The Merits are what make that a reasonable thing to do rather than a stunt.

And there is content that only exists up there

  • Ultimate carries hidden quests that do not appear on the lower two.
  • Some loot only drops on Ultimate and will never drop below it, no matter how long you farm.
  • Eight of the 66 Ultimate shrines exist nowhere else, and four of those want a Skeleton Key.

Still to verify

Cross-checked on 10 September 2026 against Crate's own guide pages, the Official Grim Dawn Wiki and RPG Site's Fangs of Asterkarn coverage, which agree on the four difficulty settings, on the Crucible being separate DLC, on the Shattered Realm belonging to Forgotten Gods, and on Ascendant arriving with Fangs of Asterkarn along with thirty Crucible waves that require the Crucible. What is still unverified is the only thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
