There are five Legendary Ships in Black Flag's naval endgame — brutal fights that demand a fully upgraded Jackdaw and clean captaincy. Bring max Hull Armour, elite cannons and the heavy mortar, and read each one's pattern before you commit.
Five ships, four fights
⚔️ El Impoluto
A Spanish Man-o-War with a devastating ram — keep moving, never sit still, and punish the recovery after its charge.
🖤 La Dama Negra
Fast and mortar-heavy; brace before its barrages and answer with heavy shot and your own mortar between volleys.
⚓ HMS Prince
A solo three-phase brawl — it retreats into the fog after each phase and bombards you with mortars before reappearing; ram it down the moment it resurfaces.
👑 Royal Sovereign
Half of the twin fight alongside HMS Fearless — you can't board either ship to repair mid-fight, so don't chase them when they sail off; mortar them as they turn back to face you.
🚢 HMS Fearless
The other half of the twin fight; once its partner sinks, the survivor gets noticeably more aggressive — though each twin has only about half the health of a solo Legendary Ship.
Recommended Jackdaw setup
🛡️ Hull Armour (max)
Your health bar. Bump every rank to the elite tier before you even find the ships — survivability decides these fights more than raw damage.
💥 Broadside Cannons (elite)
Your bread-and-butter damage. Elite broadsides need a design plan looted from the world, so grab it before you commit.
🎯 Heavy Shot & Ram
Heavy shot melts hulls on close passes; the ram punishes a ship that's just finished a charge or barrage.
🧨 Mortar & Fire Barrels
The mortar chips from range between the enemy's volleys; fire barrels buy you space when a fight collapses on top of you.
Winning tactics
- Max the Jackdaw first — Hull Armour, Broadside Cannons, Ram and the heavy mortar are non-negotiable.
- Brace (hold the prompt) just before incoming broadsides to survive the big hits.
- Keep the wind at your back for mobility and use ramming on weakened passes.
- Drop fire barrels to break away if you get surrounded, then re-engage on your terms.
Rewards
Each Legendary Ship pays out money and a legendary cosmetic for the Jackdaw, and sinking all five unlocks the Devil Of The Caribbean trophy. The ram upgrade the 2013 original gave for beating them now comes from one of the new officer quests instead. In Resynced the ships respawn and can be fought again, so there's no penalty for backing off and coming back later.
Before you engage
- Fully upgrade the Jackdaw — half-measures get you sunk fast against these ships.
- Learn the arena: use its islands to break line of fire and reposition.
- For the twins (Royal Sovereign & HMS Fearless), you can't board either to repair mid-fight — don't chase them when they sail off; mortar them as they turn back to face you.
- HMS Prince fights alone across three phases and vanishes into the fog between them; use the gap to reposition, then ram it when it reappears.
- There's no timer or penalty, so play patiently and disengage to reset when low.
