Black Flag is set in the 1710s West Indies, mixing real Golden-Age pirates with the eternal Assassin–Templar conflict. It's one of the series' most grounded historical settings, built around the brief, doomed dream of a pirate republic at Nassau.

Why it endures
Black Flag is remembered as a high point of the series because its fantasy — being an actual pirate captain — is so complete: singing shanties, boarding merchantmen, diving for treasure and ruling the waves. The Assassin story is almost a frame around a superb open-world pirate simulation.
