Black Flag is set in the 1710s West Indies, mixing real Golden-Age pirates with the eternal Assassin–Templar conflict. It's one of the series' most grounded historical settings, built around the brief, doomed dream of a pirate republic at Nassau.

The fall of the pirate republic
- By the mid-1710s the self-styled Flying Gang had made Nassau their own, and pirates made up roughly 1,000 of the town's population — the real backdrop to the game's Nassau missions.
- Woodes Rogers reached Nassau in late July 1718 as the Bahamas' new royal governor — his ships were off the harbour on 24 July and Rogers came ashore on 27 July, though there is no consensus on the exact date — carrying King George I's proclamation of pardon for any pirate who surrendered and gave up the trade.
- Most of the Flying Gang took the pardon; Charles Vane refused it outright, torching a captured ship in the harbour to cover his own escape rather than surrender.
- Rogers's cleanup — rebuilding the fort, restoring civil government, chasing down holdouts — is usually credited as the beginning of the end for the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean.
