Your First Five Hours in Pharloom

Buy first
The Compass, from Shakra in the Marrow, for 70 rosaries — without it the map does not show where you are.
Dying
Your rosaries stay as a cocoon where you fell; reach it before dying again or they are gone.
Healing
Bind: hold the button, spend most of the spool, regain three masks.
Route that works
Moss Grotto → Bone Bottom → the Marrow (Compass, Straight Pin) → Deep Docks for Swift Step → Far Fields for the cloak.

Three things the game will not tell you

📍 Buy the Compass first
Shakra sells it in the Marrow for 70 rosaries. Without it the map does not show where you are, and Pharloom is not a place to be lost in early. Equip it in a yellow slot and forget it is there.
💰 Rosaries are held, not owned
Die and your rosaries stay as a cocoon where you fell. Die again before you reach it and they are gone. A Rosary String in the inventory is safe money; loose rosaries are not. Spend before a boss.
🩹 Bind, and what it costs
Healing is Bind: hold the button, spend most of the spool, regain three masks. The spool fills by hitting things. That is the whole rhythm of the game — attack to earn the right to heal.

The order that works

  1. Moss Grotto to Bone Bottom

The Moss Mother, then the town: Pebb’s shop, the wishwall, the bench. Silkspear is at the Moss Grotto statue — your first silk skill, and a ranged one.

  2. The Marrow, and the Bell Beast

Shakra for the Compass, Grindle in the jail for the Straight Pin, the Shard Pendant in the lava room. The Bell Beast gives the first Silk Heart and the two free Bellways; nothing before it is worth grinding.

  3. Deep Docks for Swift Step

The dash is at an altar in the northernmost part of the docks. Lace waits in the same area; she is the first fight that punishes attacking while she is attacking.

  4. Far Fields for the cloak

The Seamstress wants 25 spine cores from Hokers; the Drifter’s Cloak is the glide and the way onward. The Fourth Chorus is the region’s bell.

  5. Shellwood for Cling Grip, Bellhart for Needolin

Sister Splinter guards the wall jump; Widow guards the bell and the needolin. From there Greymoor, Blasted Steps, the Last Judge and the Citadel.

What Patch 1 changed, and why it matters to a new file

  • Moorwing and Sister Splinter were made slightly easier on 11 September 2025, a week after launch; Sandcarvers hit for less. If a guide written in launch week calls them walls, that is why.
  • Some prices went down and some rosary rewards went up in the same patch. The costs in this guide are post-patch.
  • Team Cherry said afterwards that no further difficulty tweaks were planned, and Patches 2 to 5 were fixes, translations and quality of life. What you play today is the tuned game.

Still to verify

Cross-checked on 17 September 2026 against the Hollow Knight Wiki, the beginner and ability guides of Game8 and Nintendo Life, and the September 2025 patch reports of Nintendo Life and GameSpot. What is still unverified is the only thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
