Mastering Dodge, Parry & Jump

Expedition 33's defence is entirely real-time, and mastering it is the single biggest jump in your play. Dodging keeps you safe; parrying keeps you safe and refunds resources with a counter; jumping answers the attacks the other two can't. Learn all three and even superbosses become fair.

The three answers

💨 Dodge
The forgiving option — a successful dodge avoids all damage. Use it when you're unsure of the timing.
⚔️ Parry
Riskier, tighter timing, but negates damage AND counters, building your resources. The reward for mastery.
⬆️ Jump
Hops over low sweeps and ground attacks that can't be dodged sideways — watch for the tell.

Reading the rhythm

  • Attacks are choreographed — react to the enemy's wind-up animation, not the projectile.
  • Multi-hit combos have a fixed beat; count them and parry each hit in sequence.
  • Unblockable grabs are flagged — dodge or jump them rather than trying to parry.
  • A fight you fail once can be practised on the retry; the timing never changes.

Building the habit

Start by dodging everything to survive and learn a boss's patterns, then swap risky windows to parries once you know the rhythm — the counters and resource refunds snowball a fight in your favour. Perfectly parrying a full boss combo is often enough to flip a losing fight into a Break-and-burst kill.

Practice drills

  • Fight easy Nevrons purely to drill parry timing before a hard boss.
  • Learn one enemy combo at a time — parry the first hit reliably, then add the next.
  • If a window is too tight, dodge it for now and come back to parrying once you're comfortable.
  • Because fights are consistent, every retry is deliberate practice, not luck.

The windows, in seconds

«Dodge is the forgiving option» is measurable. These are the timing windows, and they tighten with difficulty — the first number is the most generous setting.
Window, by difficulty
Dodge0.35s → 0.22s → 0.22s
Parry0.25s → 0.15s → 0.15s
A tenth of a second is the whole difference. On the hardest settings parry gives you 0.15s against dodge’s 0.22 — so the advice to learn dodge first is not hand-holding, it is a 45% wider window on the same animation. And notice the second and third columns are identical: the step from the easiest setting to the next is the one that hurts.
A parry is not a block. Do not hold the button and do not mash it: it is one press, a few frames before the hit lands. Mashing is the single most common reason a parry that «should have worked» did not.

What a parry actually pays

On a successful parryWhy it matters
No damage takenThe same as a dodge
You gain APThe resource your skills spend — defence funds offence
Parry every hit of a comboOnly a full chain triggers the counterattack, with bonus damage
That is why a half-parried combo pays almost nothing. Parrying three of four hits gets you three lots of AP and no counter, which is often worse than dodging all four safely. Commit to the whole chain or take the safe option — the middle ground is the expensive one.
Perfect Dodge is your parry trainer. When «Perfect Dodge» flashes, you were within a hair of the parry window on the same attack. Dodge a boss until you are reading its wind-ups, then move the same timing onto the parry button.

Still to verify

The dodge and parry windows in seconds, and that a counterattack needs the full combo parried. The three columns are read as the game's three difficulty settings; the sources do not name them. Written from public sources, not from a playthrough.
