What Konami states in its own material
📅 15 October 2026, four platforms
Konami's pre-order announcement dates the game to 15 October 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and Steam. Nintendo's own store page lists the Switch version on the same day, as does Konami's demo announcement. Konami's European pre-order post did not carry a Switch date when it went up, which is the only place the four platforms are not listed together.
🗡️ An exploration-based 2D action game
That is Konami's phrase on its own site, and Steam's short description repeats it as a 2D Action-Exploration title. Steam files the game under Action and RPG. Press coverage also describes it as an action platformer. The word metroidvania comes from the press, not from Konami.
🌹 Rose Belmont
Konami names the playable character as Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont. The previews add that her mother is Sypha Belnades, which matches the Sypha costume sold in the Midnight Edition and Alejandra Reynoso's place in the voice cast.
🕯️ Paris, 1499
Konami sets the game in Paris in 1499, twenty-three years after Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, and released it into the series' fortieth anniversary year. Konami's demo announcement describes a medieval Paris where creatures are surfacing and a castle has appeared in the middle of the city.
🔗 The Vampire Killer, and what it does
Konami's announcement says the whip returns as both a weapon and a way of moving — swinging across gaps, and striking from positions you could not otherwise reach. Konami also confirms seven weapon categories, equippable relics for attack and defence, and the Arcana system, in which defeated bosses are sealed into tarot cards that grant spells and actions.
🏗️ Who is making it
Evil Empire is the developer, with Motion Twin advising; Konami publishes and is credited alongside Evil Empire on Steam and Nintendo's store. Evil Empire made the Dead Cells expansions, including the 2023 Return to Castlevania one. Production reportedly began in 2022, and the announcement reportedly came at a PlayStation State of Play in February 2026.
So what kind of Castlevania is it?
This is the question the sources answer most clearly, and the answer is consistent. It is 2D, not 3D, and it is exploration-led, not stage-based. Konami calls it an exploration-based 2D action game. The people who have played it are less cautious: every preview uses the word metroidvania, and they describe the things that make one — a large connected map, areas visibly closed off until you have the right skill, destructible secret walls, mirror rooms that save and act as fast-travel points, and abilities taken from bosses that open the way forward. One preview compares the shape of it to Evil Empire's own The Rogue Prince of Persia rather than to Symphony of the Night; others say the roguelite habits of Dead Cells are absent — no permadeath, no procedurally generated levels. The visuals are 2D with layered and 3D elements behind them, described in previews as 2.5D, hand-drawn work mixed with 3D assets. What no source states is how large the map is, how many areas or bosses it holds, or how long a full run takes.
Who has played it, and how much
| Source | Build and event | What they reached |
| PlayStation Blog | Hands-on report, 17 July 2026 | Named two bosses, The Fallen in the sewers and Joan of Arc on a rooftop, and set out the Arcana, relic and weapon systems in detail. |
| Longest press preview | Three hours on an early build | The longest session reported anywhere: three bosses and three keys to open the Catacombs, of which the writer cleared two before time ran out. |
| gamescom preview | Short demo, gamescom 2026 | The opening with Notre-Dame burning, the first major boss, and the whip arriving afterwards. |
| PAX West preview | 20 minutes on PC, PAX West 2026 | A boss it calls the Guardian, plus mirror rooms as save and fast-travel points. |
| Tokyo Game Show preview | 20 minutes, Tokyo Game Show 2026 | A sewer area and a guard tower, two bosses, and three of the relics. |
| Tokyo Game Show hands-on | Hands-on, Tokyo Game Show 2026 | The curse on Rose's arm, the Arcana cards and the relic meter. |
| First-hour preview | About the first hour | Judged it familiar but solid, and said it does not appear to reinvent the genre. |
Where the sources do not line up
| On | One source | The other |
| The release date | Konami, the Xbox store and Nintendo's store: 15 October 2026. | Steam's own store data reads 14 October 2026. No source explains the difference; it may be a time-zone unlock. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | MP1st's preview lists Switch 2 among the launch platforms, and Nintendo Everything's headline says the demo is coming to Switch and Switch 2. | Nintendo's own store page lists the Switch 2 only as Supported, with behaviour consistent with Nintendo Switch — backward compatibility, not a separate version. Nintendo Everything's own text mentions only Switch, as do Eurogamer.es and every other Vandal report except its cast report, which lists Switch 2. No native Switch 2 version has been announced. |
| The whip | Konami says the whip is a weapon and a traversal tool; the PlayStation Blog describes grappling that chains into attacks. | Shacknews and MP1st say it is used for traversal rather than combat, and MP1st says Rose starts with a sword. CGMagazine says the whip arrives only after the first major boss. |
| The age rating | The Xbox store lists Teen. | Nintendo's store listing reads as Mature. The content descriptors are the same on both: blood, mild suggestive themes and violence. |
Not announced, and worth not assuming
❓ How long it is
No source gives a length for the full game. The longest anyone has reported playing is three hours of an early build, and the show-floor demos were twenty minutes. Konami has not published an estimate.
❓ Subscriptions
Nothing in Konami's material or any storefront mentions Game Pass, PlayStation Plus or the Nintendo Switch Online catalogue. The Xbox store lists the game at its own price, not as included. No subscription release has been announced.
❓ Anything after launch
No expansion, season pass, roadmap or free update has been announced. The two items Nintendo's store lists as DLC — a Bonus Contents Pack and the Digital Sound & Art Gallery — are the Midnight Edition contents, not new content.
❓ The composer
Konami has not named one. Michiru Yamane, who scored Symphony of the Night, said in a May 2026 interview that she is not working on this game. Press coverage confirms an arrangement of Bloody Tears and electronic reworkings of series themes, with nobody credited.
❓ Difficulty modes
No named difficulty settings have been published. Two previews describe adjustable modifiers — damage scaling, and respawning at a boss door — that the developers pointed them to, but neither lists the menu.
❓ Trophies, achievements and New Game Plus
The trophy and achievement list is out: 30 entries, three of them for the three endings — bad, normal and true. No source describes New Game Plus or a difficulty unlock, and neither should be assumed from earlier Castlevania games.
Cross-checked
Cross-checked on 22 September 2026 against Konami's own pages, the Steam, Xbox and Nintendo store listings, the PlayStation Blog, and the coverage of Wikipedia, Kotaku, RPGFan, Shacknews, CGMagazine, MP1st, VGC, Gematsu, Nintendo Life, Nintendo Everything, Noisy Pixel and Time Extension; re-checked on 2 October 2026 against Eurogamer.es, Vandal, EliteGuias, PowerPyx and Konami's demo-launch post of 1 October. Steam's 14 October date, the Switch 2 question, the whip's role and the age rating are recorded above as disagreements rather than resolved. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it, and what the sources do not describe is not on this page.
