- Gunplay
- Bloom removed; recoil, convergence and handling rebuilt; weapon and environment share one field of view (callofduty.com).
- Movement
- Eight named additions, mantling chief among them. Not Omnimovement — reported explicitly, and both hands-on previews say so.
- Attachments
- Apex Attachments, one or more per weapon, unlocked by fully levelling it; they sit in their own Gunsmith slot.
- Time to kill
- Multiplayer design lead Jacky Reynolds told the press the TTK is slightly longer at range than Modern Warfare II's.
- The sore points
- Spawns, long TTK in beta weekend two, unreliable slides, three-lane map design.
Gunplay, as Activision describes it
🎯 No bloom
Activision's stated goal is that hipfire lands where the weapon is pointed, with the random spread cone removed. It repeats the same formula across several posts: no bloom, no guesswork, no doubt.
🔧 Recoil and handling rebuilt
Recoil, convergence and weapon handling are described as rebuilt to follow player input more directly, with weapons responding to movement, stance changes and the environment.
👁️ One field of view
In earlier Call of Duty games the weapon was rendered at a lower field of view than the world around it. Activision says the two now share one, which is meant to make firefights read more naturally.
🔊 Audio and visibility
Activision lists realistic audio propagation and refined depth of field as part of the same technology stack, aimed at making enemies easier to pick out without flattening the look.
🛡️ Riot Shields are Equipment now
Previews report the reclassification: the shield no longer costs a weapon slot, degrades under sustained fire, and can be planted as cover.
The eight movement mechanics Activision named
| Mechanic | What Activision says it does |
| Mantle Slide | Transition straight from a mantle into a slide — over a car bonnet, a planter or low cover — without stopping. |
| Mantle Momentum | Forward velocity is preserved until the obstacle is cleared, instead of the hard stop mantles used to impose. |
| Mantle Steering | Steer left or right mid-mantle, aim down sights while entering a space, or abort the mantle after it has started. |
| Supine Slide | Double-tap crouch during a sprint for a longer, lower slide that ends with the operator on their back, feet forward. |
| Pipe Climb and Fast Pipe Slide | Climb pipework on buildings, or hold crouch to slide into a pipe and descend it quickly. |
| Hang Shimmy | Move left or right while hanging from a ledge, before climbing, dropping or shooting. |
| Hang Lean | While hanging and aiming down sights, lean and rotate with full 360-degree control. |
| Climbing Jump | Jump directionally from ledges, ladders and pipes to reposition faster. |
It is deliberately not Omnimovement
⚠️This is the point most likely to be assumed wrong. Modern Warfare 4 reportedly does not use the Omnimovement system from Treyarch's Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7, and both hands-on previews confirm it from play: one calls the result faster than Infinity Ward's last game but nothing as drastic as Omnimovement, and the other spells out that you cannot sprint, slide or dive in any lateral direction the way Black Ops 7 allowed. Co-studio head Mark Grigsby has been quoted attributing the movement rework to player feedback about Modern Warfare II feeling restricted.
Apex Attachments
🔓 How you get one
Activision: most weapons launch with their own Apex Attachment and occasionally more than one, earned by fully progressing that weapon. They use a dedicated Gunsmith slot, so they do not cost you a stock or a sight unless the attachment is itself a sight.
🧨 What they actually do
Activision says they can change handling, firing behaviour, tactical utility, stealth or combat role. One hands-on preview, which had them all unlocked in a demo build, listed a shotgun with explosive rounds, a revolver grip for fanning the hammer, a sniper rifle with side-mounted throwing knives, a silenced prototype SMG, an airburst launcher for the AK that kills behind cover, an SMG conversion for the M4, and ammunition that spots enemies.
⚔️ The five in the Vault Edition
Activision publishes the Signature Weapon Collection's Apex Attachments by name: Kastov Arc, a disruption barrel emitting an RF pulse; ISO Trace, RFID ammunition that tracks a hit target; Rezi Enforcer, pump-action cycling with hot-loaded explosive slugs; Oris Razor, a receiver-mounted module holding up to three throwing knives. The fifth Signature item is a Combat Knife.
🧰 The rest of the loadout screen
Create-a-Class is redesigned to hold the operator, weapons, equipment, perks and killstreaks in one loadout. Attachments are shared by weapon class, so unlocking one carries across. Gunny, a build assistant, can configure close-, mid- or long-range builds from configurations Infinity Ward's weapons team wrote; the studio says it is not a chatbot.
What the people who played it said
| Source | What they played | What they reported |
| Hands-on preview at Infinity Ward | About 90 minutes of multiplayer at Infinity Ward, plus Gunfight on Kill Block. | Audio, animation and feedback exceptional and well clear of the last two Black Ops; Apex Attachments a genuine change; movement fluid but possibly too fast; maps pretty but the familiar three-lane formula. Not convinced it is a major leap, but expects it to be the best-playing Call of Duty in years. |
| Press-event preview | Two multiplayer maps at a press event. | Fluid movement, weighty handling, dense visual and audio detail. Quotes multiplayer design lead Jacky Reynolds that TTK is slightly longer at range than Modern Warfare II's, so distance fights need more precise aim, while close range stays as lethal as ever. |
| Campaign presentation preview | Hands-off Campaign presentation from co-studio head Jack O'Hara, plus multiplayer. | Campaign framed around a grunt who does not understand everything happening around him, with Price's thread described as globe-trotting. Reported persistent spawn problems — enemies appearing behind the player, immediate deaths on respawn — and could not fully explore Apex Attachments because of bugs. Did not play the Campaign. |
| Beta report | Over 50 hours across both beta weekends, including Switch 2. | Liked Hijack and the Zodiac Warzone map. Found weekend two's time to kill excessive, slides failing to register, and Ground War the weakest part with repetitive spawn-and-snipe cycles. On Switch 2 called it a competent build at up to 60 fps but hard to aim with Joy-Con sticks, with muddy textures making opponents blend into Silkworm. |
Campaign gameplay, so far
Very little has been in anyone's hands. Activision describes the Campaign as mixing large-scale battles, covert missions, combined-arms warfare and cinematic set pieces, and says the full movement suite works across Campaign, Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. The one playable slice was the beta mission "Entrenched", which put players in a large-scale assault alongside armoured vehicles and infantry. Infinity Ward associate design director Alex Norris told the press at the studio that missions are built with their own identity and that the team tried to subvert familiar mission archetypes, and called it probably the largest Modern Warfare campaign — a claim about scale from the people who made it, with no mission count or hour figure behind it. Nothing has been said about co-op, difficulty options, collectibles or a mission select.
Cross-checked
Cross-checked on 22 September 2026 against callofduty.com's posts, Xbox Wire, and the coverage of Wikipedia, GameRant, PC Gamer, GamesRadar+, Game Informer and GamingTrend. The previews disagree about whether the faster movement is an improvement and about the map design, and both readings are recorded above. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it, and what the sources do not describe is not on this page.
