Fourteen Doors, Fifteen Trials

What a Nightmare Door is

🌱 You will not walk past one by accident
All fourteen doors are indicated by big purple roots running along the ground toward them, and they are all in plain sight. Two of them — in Homecoming and in The One That Got Away — are entered automatically as part of the story.
🧠 A trial is a memory
Each door opens a Nightmare Trial. The short goals listed beside each door — track a target, reach a place — are the story objective on screen when you find it; the trials themselves come in three kinds, a fight with a set task, a timed run to the exit or a multi-wave gauntlet. Completing them pays Adaptation XP toward Adaptation Level 10.
🔁 All of them replayable
Every trial can be replayed after the story from the Nightmare Cabin, once you have unlocked more skills. Mission Select itself opens at the second door, so the doors are the mechanism that makes the whole game non-missable.
⏱️ Some are timed, some are fights
Rockbottom Blues, in Death Comes to Death, asks you to reach the exit in 47 seconds, and Last Stand at Cold Pines, in One Last Mission, is a multi-wave gauntlet fight. No timing or wave count is given for the others.

Why the count is 14 and 15 at the same time

💡
If your in-game counter reads 14 and a guide says 15, neither is wrong. One guide's per-mission collectible table has 31 rows: the 30 missions, plus a post-story row called "Best There Is Trial" at the Nightmare Cabin carrying a 1 in the Nightmare Doors column. Add that column up and you get 15. But the same guide's stated total is 14, its door guide says "14 Nightmare Door Locations and 15 Nightmare Trials", the Pathways of the Mind trophy asks for 14, and the game's 102-collectible total — 68 crates, 20 bottles, 14 doors — only balances at 14. The resolution is that the fifteenth is a trial without a door: a figurine on a shelf after the credits, not something found in a mission. Our tracker holds the fourteen doors; the fifteenth trial is here, on this page.

The four ratings

Trials are ranked bronze, silver, gold and Adamantium, with Adamantium the highest. Only two thresholds matter for the platinum: at least bronze in every trial, which Repressed Memories requires, and Adamantium in any single one, which is Adamantium Dreams — that one is very easy, and one trial is enough. Higher ratings pay more Adaptation XP, which is the only reason to push past bronze anywhere else.

The secret fifteenth

  1. Finish the fourteen first

Repressed Memories starts here: find all 14 Nightmare Doors during the story and score at least a bronze rating in each of their trials. Mission Select from the Nightmare Cabin covers anything left behind.

  2. Find the figurine

After the story you spawn in the Nightmare Cabin, and the secret fifteenth trial — "Best There Is" — appears as the bottom right figurine on the shelf. Click through the figurines until you find it.

  3. Bronze is enough

The trial only has to be beaten at bronze or better for the trophy. Adamantium anywhere in the set is a separate, easier requirement (Adamantium Dreams).

  4. Then go outside

With the trial cleared, leave the cabin and follow the scent trail; it unlocks a hidden epilogue cutscene, and that is what pops Repressed Memories. What the cutscene shows is not described here.

The trophies the doors carry

  • Waking Nightmare (bronze) — discover a Nightmare Door "in the wild". Story-related at the second gate, in mission 5 The One That Got Away.
  • Pathways of the Mind (silver) — discover all 14 doors.
  • Adamantium Dreams (bronze) — Adamantium rating on any one trial. It is very easy.
  • Repressed Memories (gold) — all 14 doors, bronze in every trial, the secret fifteenth beaten, and the scent trail followed outside the cabin.
  • Secondary Mutations (gold) — indirectly: trial completions are half of what raises Adaptation Level to 10, the Whisky Bottles being the other half.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 22 September 2026 and re-checked on 1 October 2026 against the guides of PowerPyx, Push Square, Dayngls' Guides and Vandal and EliteGuias' trophy list; the table of fifteen in the callout above is PowerPyx's. No source we read describes what any trial actually plays like beyond its stated objective, or what the hidden epilogue shows, so neither is described here. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it, and what the sources do not describe is not on this page.
