Themes
Beneath the action, Hades is about family, grief and the courage to keep trying. Its roguelike loop is woven into the fiction — the Underworld literally reforms you after death — so mechanics and story reinforce each other rather than competing. That's why the 'grind' never feels like filler: every run pushes a real narrative forward. Nyx's part in it goes beyond raising an abandoned infant, too: helping Zagreus reach the surface is also her own long game to thaw the standing rivalry between the chthonic gods below and the Olympians above.
How long to the true ending?
- Your first successful escape is only the beginning — the credits roll many times before the real finale.
- The true ending gates behind exactly ten successful trips to the surface to see Persephone.
- Sources differ on what comes next: Fextralife says Persephone chooses to return with Zagreus following the eleventh escape, while PowerPyx says the story is complete after the tenth and the epilogue then needs two more Prophecies fulfilled. Vandal only says it takes a little over ten trips to the surface, which fits either reading. The family scene that follows is the real reconciliation the whole game has been building toward.
