What the demo is, and what to do with it now

  1. It is free, and on every platform

PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, since 3 September 2026 (Square Enix's PlayStation Blog post).

  2. It covers the opening through chapter one

Set in the Kingdom of Grandshelt, running roughly three to five hours.

  3. The save is not wasted

Square Enix states that demo save data carries over to the full game when it launches. That means time spent now is not time repeated on 22 October.

  4. An optional Sephiroth fight

Square Enix's PlayStation Blog post and press release, describing the game: "Players will be able to find and challenge Sephiroth in hopes of winning and unlocking a special reward." RPGFan's demo post is the only source that puts the fight in the demo, and it describes the reward as a special item. What it is has not been published.

  5. It doubles as a hardware test

Because the demo is on all five platforms at once, one outlet was able to compare Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Steam Deck and ROG Ally before anyone had to buy anything. Their observations are on the Platforms page.

After launch

🚫 No additional Visions planned
Nakashima, in an interview reported 7 September 2026: "As of now, there are currently no plans for additional Visions. We wanted to make sure our focus and all our resources were allocated towards ensuring a satisfying and fun main game experience." He allowed that commercial success and strong fan reception "does open up possibilities".
📕 No sequel in development
Nakashima told Noisy Pixel the team is approaching Resonance as if "this is the one game", treating it as a complete standalone title with no sequel currently in development. Brave Exvius had further story arcs; whether any of them is ever adapted has not been stated.
🎯 The endgame is in the box
What Square Enix has described as content after the credits is content shipping with the game: Secret Dungeons, Mighty Foes in the caverns, repeat Gilgamesh encounters and Ultima Weapon. None of it is described as downloadable.
📢 No patch or roadmap published
No day-one patch, post-launch roadmap, update schedule or review embargo date has been announced in any source we read. If one lands between now and 22 October, it will be after this page was written.

One honest caveat about a pre-launch page

💡
This page was written on 22 September 2026, a month before the game is out. Dates can move, editions can change, a subscription deal can be announced the week of launch, and a demo build is not a shipped build. Everything above is sourced to a dated statement; none of it is a prediction. When the game is out, the pages that matter will be the ones written from playing it — and this one will need rewriting rather than patching.

Cross-checked

Cross-checked on 22 September 2026 against Square Enix's PlayStation Blog post and storefront listings and the reporting of Wikipedia, Game Informer, Gematsu, RPGFan, VICE, Final Weapon, RPG Site, Noisy Pixel, Kotaku, CGMagazine, TheGamer, Player2 and GosuGamers. The 9 June announcement date rests on Wikipedia and Game Informer, not on Square Enix's press release, which could not be read. Not from a playthrough: nobody here has played it, and what the sources do not describe is not on this page.
