Lapis, the Crystals and the Cast — the Premise as the Official Material Gives It
The premise
The game is set in the world of Lapis. In short: after the Earth Crystal is destroyed by Veritas of the Dark, Rain, Lasswell and Fina set out to protect the crystals that remain. Square Enix's own storefront blurb, identical on Steam and the Nintendo eShop, puts it this way: "Return to the pixel-art world of FINAL FANTASY, evolved from its classic roots. Travel with companions bound by fate and call on Visions to aid you in battle to uncover the truth behind a force that threatens to bring everything to ruin." That is the whole of the premise as published. Anything past it has not been described by a source, so it is not described here.
The people
🗡️ Rain
The protagonist, a sword-wielding knight who commands the airship squadron of the Kingdom of Grandshelt. Voiced by Clifford Chapin in English and Nobuhiko Okamoto in Japanese.
🛡️ Lasswell
Deputy commander of the same squadron and Rain's childhood friend, orphaned and raised by Rain's family. Voiced by Alejandro Saab in English and Yusuke Kobayashi in Japanese.
🏹 Fina
A girl who emerges from the Earth Crystal with no memory, skilled in white magic and archery. Voiced by Lizzie Freeman in English and Akane Fujita in Japanese.
🌑 Veritas of the Dark
The antagonist who destroys the crystals. Voiced by Ian Sinclair in English and Akio Otsuka in Japanese. Square Enix's screenshots name Veritas of the Flame, Veritas of the Earth and Veritas of the Light as further figures shown, without saying what they do.
❔ An unnamed woman
A fifth voiced character is listed whom Square Enix has not named: a mysterious woman who bears enmity toward Veritas. Voiced by Corey Pettit in English and Inori Minase in Japanese. Her role has not been stated.
🔧 Lid
Joins the party ahead of the Wind Shrine section one preview covered, and can give her turn to another party member. She is described as an aspiring Cid and a lead of the story alongside Rain.
👥 Nichol, Jake and Sakura
Nakashima has said in interview that Rain, Lasswell, Nichol, Jake and Lid each have side quests filling in their pasts and showing how their relationships change. Square Enix's screenshots introduce Jake as a rebel leader and Sakura as a sage of Mysidia. Little more about them has been shown.
Where it goes after the opening
🔥 The Zoldaad Empire
"A powerful military nation and the home of the Fire Crystal", in the description Square Enix gave in its 24 August 2026 batch of details.
❄️ Mysidia, the Magiapolis
"The legendary city of mages", which holds the Ice Crystal. Sakura is named as a sage there.
🌬️ The Wind Shrine
A chapter-two location, reached over a world map with random encounters, where the party is looking for the wind crystal. It is what nearly every gamescom hands-on was given to play.
What it takes from Brave Exvius, and what it does not
It adapts the first story arc, "Lapis", of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius — one arc, not the whole mobile game.
The scenario and gameplay were written from scratch, with story events in a different order and scenes the mobile game did not have.
Director Hiroto Furuya has said the team "didn't really feel constricted by the original title because we are creating this as a new game, essentially".
Producer Keisuke Nakashima has said that building Resonance "requires as much work, time, and budget as creating a new title", and that development ran roughly five years and the game was built as a console RPG rather than a direct port of the mobile one.
Nakashima has said that familiarity with Brave Exvius is not necessary and the game stands on its own.
Furuya has said the team wanted "a flat playing field where regardless of if you're a long-time fan or if this is your first Final Fantasy, we wanted to make it so that you could easily dive in" — and that Vision perks were kept from being game-changing so that series veterans do not get an advantage.
The original Brave Exvius cast reportedly stays the narrative focus, and the Vision characters serve story functions rather than appearing only as fan service.
What has not been shown
No source we read describes the ending, any twist, any late-game party member, the number of chapters, or what happens after the Wind Shrine beyond a handful of place names. Square Enix has shown the opening and named a few later places. The rest is not public, so it is not on this page — and anyone stating it confidently four weeks before launch is not working from a source.
