The reviews

WhoScoreWhat they said
Metacritic87 (Xbox Series X|S), 83 (PC)Generally favourable, on 1 October.
OpenCritic88 average, 92% recommendOn 54 reviews, 1 October.
IGN9/10
Pure Xbox10/10The campaign, the combat and the cinematic storytelling.
VGC4/5An absolute blast, more commotion than emotion.
GameSpot7/10A campaign buried in the past.
The Guardian3/5Strong combat and destruction; the same environments again and again, and thin side missions.

What the reviews agree on

  • The combat, the visuals and the horror-leaning atmosphere are the strengths most reviews name.
  • The criticism falls on repetition, on revisiting the same parts of Kalona, and on the semi-open areas, which some liked for their choice of routes and others found weaker than the linear stretches.
  • Marcus and Dom's relationship and the depiction of Emergence Day were generally well received; some reviewers questioned how much a prequel adds to a day the first game already told.

What the beta settled

  • It settled that Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus are the two multiplayer pillars, and that both were far enough along to hand to the public seven weeks before early access.
  • It settled that the new movement is the change people will argue about: Pure Xbox's reader poll of 664 votes came out 43% loving it, 26% pretty good, 10% OK, 14% a bit disappointed and 7% really disliking it.
  • The Coalition made changes between the two weekends in response to feedback, and Pure Xbox reports Versus modes being added after fan feedback.
  • It did not show the campaign at all — the beta was multiplayer only, and the only campaign hands-on was the press build of Act 2.
  • It did not show the two unrevealed Horde Siege maps: Golden Quarter was the beta's map, and two more Kalona districts arrive at launch.
  • It had no ranked play. Versus Ranked is dated for 13 October, a week after launch; its only crossplay detail was Xbox-account linking for Steam squad invites, and nothing about servers has been published.

The Los Angeles event

Xbox ran an Emergence event at Hollywood & Vine in Los Angeles on 30 September 2026, 3pm to 10pm, the day before early access opens. The first 500 attendees, 18 and over only, could play before early access began; queuing started at noon Pacific and people in official Gears merchandise got a faster line. Prizes listed included a custom Xbox Design Lab controller designed by Luke Preece — the same illustrator credited with the Collector's Edition SteelBook. Xbox Wire's post announces no new game details.

After launch

🗓️ Five named seasons
Season 1: Emergence began with early access on 1 October and runs eight weeks, to 1 December, with three two-week events — Halloween, 20 Years of Gears and Thanksgibbing — each with a Versus event mode, a Horde Siege event mission and its own rewards. The seasons after it are named Legacy, Infiltration, Pendulum and Devotion; details for each are said to be coming closer to it. Missing at launch, by the same post: taking enemies as meat shields, Lancer chainsaw duels, private lobbies and leaderboards. The Coalition says it built E-Day from scratch rather than on the earlier games, and is working to add them after launch or in its next game.
🛡️ Horde Siege keeps growing
New classes, maps, missions and modifiers are promised for Horde Siege after launch, along with limited-time events. The four launch classes and three launch maps are the starting point, not the ceiling.
🪙 Earned, not passed
The Coalition's stated model is no battle pass and no tour of duty, with nearly everything earnable by playing, a weekly rotating shop and no shop exclusives. Iron stays optional, and the purchase-only exceptions it names are Premium Edition content, charity bundles and partnership items such as a Metallica collaboration.
❓ Campaign add-ons
Nothing has been announced. The published roadmap is multiplayer seasons only.
❓ A next Gears
The Coalition declined to comment to Pure Xbox on whether another mainline Gears is in development.
