Versus and Horde Siege at Launch — Modes, Classes, Progression and What Is Missing

Versus: four modes, all 4v4

ModeHow The Coalition describes it
Team DeathmatchThe returning staple, rebuilt around a dynamic respawn system.
ConquestA turn on King of the Hill: several zones across the map stay active rather than rotating, and a team scores by holding one long enough.
DemolitionTeams fight over a single neutral bomb that has to be planted and detonated at one of two bombsites. Three detonations takes the match.
CrucibleNew to the series. Built around a Power Core that a team carries, inside a zone that moves and shrinks as the round goes on.

The six Versus maps at launch

  • Outpost
  • Battleship
  • Park
  • Precinct
  • Market
  • Skyward
  • The Coalition describes all six as symmetrical, built around cover positions, fronts and lanes. Xbox Wire's own billing — the biggest multiplayer maps in the series — is the publisher's claim, not a measurement. Limited-time modes are said to rotate in with the seasons.

Horde Siege

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Twelve players, three squads
Three COG squads of four, on one stage, each running its own mission rather than all defending the same point. The Coalition calls it an evolution of Horde rather than a return to it.
🗺️ Three maps at launch
Spread across districts of Kalona. Golden Quarter is the one that was playable in the beta; the other two had not been revealed as of the deep dive.
🎯 Five objective types
Secure, Calibrate, Repair, Defend and Horde. The Horde objective is built around R.I.G.s. Optional objectives reward the squad that takes them on.
💀 Squad lives
Wipe out as a squad and you spend a squad life. Run out of squad lives and the mission fails — the failure condition is shared, not per-player.

The four classes

AssaultA damage boost while in coverSonic Disruptor
BreacherBetter melee and resistance to status effectsAdrenaline Injector, which refills health
MarksmanImproved damage on critical hitsPulse Drone
MedicFaster health regenerationStim Vaporizer, which heals and revives nearby Gears

Side objectives and caches in Horde Siege

  • Matches throw up optional side objectives — high-value targets, E-Holes to close, bombs to defuse — that pay the squad in weapon parts, perks and Energy at the end.
  • Energy is spent at the Supply Cache; Perk Caches hand out squad rewards, with a maximum reward worth an achievement.
  • Most of the achievement list lives here and in Versus: the order to take them in is on the Achievement Roadmap.

Mission types and difficulties

Detail
Blitz15 to 20 minutes, one or two objectives.
Siege20 to 40 minutes, several objectives.
HordeUp to 50 to 60 minutes, ten waves.
InfantryTuned for class levels 10 to 20. The Coalition's deep dive lists it first of three; Game8 lists a Rookie tier below it, for class levels 0 to 10.
CommanderClass levels 20 to 30.
AllfatherMaximum class level only.

Progression, by the numbers

  • Player Level caps at 100, and you can Re-Up up to four times — 500 levels in total.
  • Each class carries 30 levels of its own progression at launch.
  • Over 80 medal series, graded Bronze, Silver, Gold, Onyx and a new Diamond tier; Diamond awards an exclusive Player Title.
  • Twelve weekly challenges, split evenly between Horde Siege and Versus.
  • Twenty seasonal challenges spanning both.
  • Over 60 character skins at launch, and The Coalition says every major character is unlockable on day one.
  • Other cosmetic types: weapon skin sets — unlocked as full sets — plus poses, banners, emblems, icons, titles and menu music.
  • Weapon mods are customisable for the first time in a mainline Gears game; the published example is fitting a bayonet to a Gnasher.

Two currencies, and no battle pass

Coins are the free currency, earned from matches, from every ten Player Levels and from medals; there is a weekly cap on what matches pay out, but not on the level and medal rewards. Iron is the paid currency and The Coalition frames it as optional. The shop rotates weekly, prices complete sets as sets, and The Coalition states it holds no shop exclusives — nearly every item can be earned by playing, with no battle pass and no tour of duty. The exceptions it names as purchase-only are the Premium Edition content, charity bundles and partnership items, giving a Metallica collaboration as an example.

What the open beta contained

📆 Two weekends
6 to 10 August for pre-orders on Xbox Series X|S or Steam and for Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members; 13 to 17 August for everyone, on every eligible platform, with no pre-order or subscription needed. Both ran from 12pm Pacific to 10am Pacific, and gearsofwar.com says the content was identical across the two.
🎮 Horde Siege and 4v4 Versus
Pure Xbox's reporting describes three Horde Siege shapes in the beta — Blitz at around fifteen minutes, and full ten-wave Horde Siege running from 45 minutes to over an hour — with Versus running Team Deathmatch among its modes, and maps shared between the two pillars.
🏅 What carried over
Challenge rewards — character skins, weapon skin sets, banners, emblems and icons — stay available at launch. Class progression, Player Level and medal progress were wiped (gearsofwar.com's beta FAQ).
🔗 Crossplay
Cross-platform squad invites required linking an Xbox account on Steam (gearsofwar.com's beta FAQ). The beta had no ranked play. No tick rate or dedicated server detail has been published.
⚖️ How it landed
Mixed, leaning positive. Pure Xbox's reader poll of 664 votes: 43% loving it, 26% pretty good, 10% OK, 14% a bit disappointed, 7% really disliking it. Praise went to Horde Siege's energy and the added verticality; complaints were the movement's weight, unclear objective markers, enemies soaking damage, AI not backfilling squads when players left, and executions and meatshields feeling thinner than in earlier games. The Coalition made changes between the two weekends in response.

Not in at launch

Versus Ranked opens on 13 October, a week after launch. The Coalition's Season 1 post lists as missing at launch: taking enemies as meat shields, Lancer chainsaw duels, private lobbies and leaderboards, which it is working to add after launch or in its next game.
