Hard Mode, Without the Wall

What changes

🚫 No items in battle
Potions, ethers, phoenix downs: unusable in combat. Healing is materia and abilities, revival is Raise and Aerith. Every slot that held Item Economizer is free.
🔋 MP does not come back
Rest points restore HP, not MP, as in Remake's hard mode — unless you spend a cushion at one, the single way back to MP. A chapter's MP is a budget from its first fight to its boss; the synergy abilities that grant unlimited MP, Chakra, Prayer and MP Absorption are the whole strategy.
💪 Enemies hit harder and have more
Stats up across the board; Dynamic's scaling is gone. What was a pressure window on Normal is a survival window on Hard.
📜 Manuscripts from bosses
Hard-mode bosses drop manuscripts that give SP, the last of it for the folios. It is the reason to do hard mode beyond the trophy.
🔁 Chapter select, everything kept
Levels, materia, gear, folios and every completion all carry. Play the chapters in the order you like; nobody plays 1 to 14 straight.

The chapters that hurt

  1. Chapter 11

Chapter 11 has five bosses — the Diabolic Variant in the reactor, three in the manor and the facility, Roche outside in Nibelheim — and on hard no bench between them refills MP unless you spend a cushion there. Build for MP: Prayer and Chakra on everyone, Barrier over Cure, and the Elemental-on-armour trick for the Diabolic Variant and Yin and Yang.

  2. Chapter 13

The temple splits the party into groups you did not choose, so all seven need hard-mode-ready loadouts. Keep an MP Absorption pair on each caster.

  3. Chapter 14

One long fight in phases with every character. Bank limits, bank synergy, and go in at full MP — there is nothing else to spend it on.

  4. Chapter 10

Barret and Red XIII alone in the Trials of the Gi, against Gi Nattak. No items: Barret heals with Prayer and Red XIII's Vengeance heals him, and Lifesaver is best avoided here, as it drains Barret's MP.

Still to verify

Cross-checked on 16 September 2026 and re-checked on 1 October 2026 against the guides of PowerPyx, Push Square, Game8, Vandal and EliteGuias. The MP rule is described as Remake's; that it is identical in every detail is not from a playthrough. What is still unverified is the only thing reading cannot settle — nobody here has played it.
